Are you talking about class 4 roads in Vermont or New Hampshire? I work for a municipality in the highway department in VT and have never heard of such a thing!

You will recognize it when the top 8" of your driveway (or an unmaintained road) thaws but can not drain the water through the frost below. It takes a surprisingly short time for a vehicle to 'sink' to the frame.

There’s one good thing about mud season, it is a sign that winter is over!

And that bug season is commencing!

Truthfully, we only have two seasons: Winter and Construction but there are numerous 'sub-seasons' within those two.

I would worry to much about muddy season in Pelham. I would guess that 90 % or the roads in the town are paved.
as you know that town is on the Mass border and not in the great white north side o the state.
there is some decent riding just west of you as well as well to the north as other have informed you.
I am a couple towns away from you in Mass.
riding season around here is not ( for the hardy ) over until there is over a foot of snow falls in the woods.
and even then there is always screwed and studded tires.
there are some groups and clubs that put on rides and races, most of them post here.

welcome to the east coast, feel free to reach out for any other needed local info

One of the best aspects for that town to me is the fact that my road is paved as well as my driveway. Was happy to see that with a few acres.

Been a whirlwind of a trip, but after 4 days of travel we are here and have a home. Of course, just had to get a fever yesterday which floored me and kept me from getting things done. Ah well. Fever is gone and it's back to getting the house ready.

Yup, snow blower is primed and ready. Not really worried about the snow. Already enjoyed it in Germany and again in CO.

FWIW, "class 4" roads in VT are "class 6" roads in NH.

And they are not "closed for the season" (unless they are state designated snowmobile trails). AFAIK only Mass closes unmaintained roads for the season.

He might be thinking of "no town maintenance Dec 1 through May 1".
