This will be my first ride longer than 3 days. Packing and unpacking my luggage multiple times. Tearing my bike apart and examining every piece of plastic, metal, bearing and wire. My bike has been on the stand a lot lately. Last year my dad (Dogjaw) took an impromptu trip to Colorado to raise awareness for an injured rider, the KernKountyKid. Here's Trevors famous ride report http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=527702 Dogjaw's ride report from last year http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=909800 For the past year family and friends have been hearing the tales of adventure from Dogjaw about his escapade to the Rockies. It almost feels like I've already been there Salida, Gateway, Montrose, The Million Dollar Highway, Moab etc from all the times where he would just put down his fork at the table and just say "I miss Gateway" or "Man, North Rim of the Black. You have to go" And thats where the sickness began. It really is a sickness. When all you want to do is just hop on the bikes and get out of Dodge but obligations keep you close to home. You flick through Ride Reports and see fellow inmates post their amazing adventures and the only thing you can think is those lucky dogs. The only thing Dogjaw wants to talk about is "Mesh or textile" "DR or CB" "Cottonwood or Monarch" and I find my mind drifting off as patients explain to me why they're in the clinic that day. If you've ever taken an epic trip you know of which I speak. Both Dogjaw and I have DR's so planning started with just us two going out there and hitting some passes and riding a lot of roads but then we started asking some close ADV friends in our area if they wanted to join. A few had said they wanted to go but then had to back out because of work and so on. Besides Dogjaw and I there would be two more to our party. Fletch AKA CleanDirt KLR 650. I met Fletch at a local ride a year or so ago and have ridden a few times together since then. He is a Potter by trade and does some really amazing work. Bryan KLR650. This fella Dogjaw met last year in Moab and between now and then we've grown to be friends. I think the only person more gung ho on this trip is Bryan Dogjaw DR650 The architect of this trip. The guy with the loudest mouth and ability to get homeless people to give a donation for Trevor. After 21 years of being around this cat, no trip is complete with him. ThumpStart DR650. That's me guilty as charged. Its always a party Okay okay what does renting of swine have to do with this ride report? Excellent question. One of the movies I grew up watching was Lonesome Dove. Augustus McCrae, retired Texas ranger talking about his trusty pigs that he won't rent but "any man who wants to rent a pig is hard to stop". All of our group are on either DR650's or KLR 650's in some eyes which are just "pigs" not really a dirt bike but not really a street bike either just a compromise. No better way to plan a trip than with a map and a few boxes of pizza. The plan CleanDirt is headed out a few days early so Dogjaw and I loaded up our bikes in Bryan's trailer where Fletch would go to Raton, NM and wait for us. Dogjaw, Bryan and I will take our SUV with Bryans KLR in tow and drive straight through the night. From there we head north to Salida and start working our way West to Ridgeway. The plan at this moment is to spend a day hitting passes and riding roads in this area then head west to Moab to spend a few days on the White Rim Trail. Then start working our way back via New Mexico. Unpacked Packed Were headed out tomorrow night to meet up with Fletch in Raton. Sleep? you can forget about it.
