    "We MAY Ride Now" , May 5th & 6th, 2012

For those of you just itching to get out and ride - an early season overnighter to test your new camp gear, body and bike.

Route Summary: 90% Dirt ride from Castle Rock, CO / Larkspur, CO area to Mosquito Pass and back - see how far we can get up that pass.....for those who want to try.
    Distance out: 140 miles
    Distance back: 140 miles
Bikes: Plated 250 cc Thumpers and up. GS 650 ok, anything bigger not advised. KTM 990 would be fine. Need to hit 60mph since there will be some minor slab involved. Big bikes can meet us at Rainbow Falls OHV area.
Support: None, no sag wagon. You will be 100% self supported but as a team we can help you out of course. Your bike needs to be in good condition and carry spare inner tubes. PS. keep your PSI hi - less flats.
Speed: Relaxed to Moderate -it's not a race!
Terrain: Mostly dirt roads, some tighter trail sections through Rampart and Rainbow falls.
Departure: Saturday May 5th 8:30 am sharp - Hwy 105 & Dakan Rd. 39°18'14.69"N 104°58'7.11"W I will PM my home address to those interested in a safe parking place for your rig.

Route out: (further details to come)
Head to Rampart 8:00am sharp - via Tomah Rd, Perry Park 105 . Rampart Range
    Dakan Rd. & Hwy 105 8:30 am 39°18'14.69"N 104°58'7.11"W
    Rainbow Falls OHV Parking lot 9:00am - 9:15am 39° 8'7.12"N 105° 6'19.55"W
    Westcreek
Florissant (fuel and snack) around 80mile point so stock tank is fine
    Lake George
    Tarryall trails
    La Salle Pass
    Harsel "area"
    Fairplay
Alma - locate dispersed camp area at base of Mosquito Pass and setup camp.
Mosquito Pass - if you have it in you see how far you can go up. If not you are making the fire!
Route back: Plan on same route or shorter back

Wanna join elsewhere?: You are welcome to come and go as your please or connect with us along the way. Big bikes could meet us at the Rainbow Falls OHV Parking Lot close to Woodland Park - 39° 8'7.12"N 105° 6'19.55"W
Food: Bring your own food and water - I will be carrying a fat Steak
Liability: You are responsible for yourself and your vehicle

    Thanks for the interest guys.

Rizz - Either bike would be fine. I'll be on my 650.

The Trail Creek section just west of Westcreek is one of my favourite rides as well as the La Salle Pass crossing. Modette took me there - thanks brother.

Trail Creek rd crosses the river around 12 times and it is a fun ride with good flow and sections with high speed dirt riding.

Borrowed vid from Modette - TrailCreek Rd.

Let's make the Rainbow Falls OHV Parking Lot a little rest stop to check our bikes and adjust straps etc.

I would say that it would take about 1hr - 1:15min to get there so figure around 9:15am - 9:30am we will wait at that lot.

    See ya there!

Sounds like the perfect ride to try my first overnight off the bike. I will be in Moab that weekend so I won't be able to make it. Have fun.

Rizz - Looking at the route now I would recommend the 6-fiddy if you can still make it out. Lots of wide open riding from Westcreek and on and the ride through the Rampart and Rainbow area is not the most technical, mostly ATV trails at the narrowest. Coming back on Sun we might slab a bit more depending on how we feel so that might work out better.

Should be fine with a stocker since we stop at Floraissant on the way out and coming back Como or Alta. I will also have a couple Gal spare.

That 690 would get to stretch it's legs :clap.

Perfect ride for large capacty Thumpers, not much super tight trails.

Hope you can make it out.

Is that lot the same one a person goes through on the way to hop the fence at that private lake?

Sounds good we are going to have a great time. I'll be on the Red Honda with oh crud I destroyed my rack last year - actually started tonight building a new pannier system, no pressure here -LOL

You could also meet us at the Dakan rd / hwy 105 intersection. It
would actually be muuuuch shorter than going around to the R Falls lot. The ride through Rampart is fun, just a rolling road with good flow, no single track. Either way I will post the coordinates of the R Falls parking lot tomorrow.

    Coordinates for

Hwy 105 & Dakan Rd. Should be there around 8:30'ish am
    Dakan Rd. & Hwy 105 39°18'14.69"N 104°58'7.11"W

    Rainbow Falls OHV Parking Lot 39° 8'7.12"N 105° 6'19.55"W
    9:00 - 9:15am

It looks like that Dawson Butte Parking Lot is closed after dark even though the gate is not closed - rather than risk it with the ranger (he lives close by) I will PM my home address to those interested in a safe parking place for your rig.

Looks like 60F - 70F this weekend up in the mountains - saweet.

For camping I was looking for something up the Mosquito Pass rd. but sounds like lots of private land according to the ranger I spoke to. According to some inmates there is the Alma SWA just up the road from Alma at the foot of Hoosier Pass and another good spot by Weston Pass which is about 15miles south of Fairplay (might be too far off).

We can just head to Alma and from then wing it - thats part of the fun right:wink:

My bike is ready. I built a new rack for it this weekend and looking fwd to testing it out.

I downloaded your route, (thanks for putting it out there), so I thought the least I could do is offer a suggestion for a camp spot. Just past Alma heading for the pass turn left towards Montgomery Resevoir on CO Rd 4. The road will take you around the resevoir on the north side, passing a mine and then back towards Wheeler Lake. There are a few obsticles that are fairly difficult for 4x4s but on bikes they shouldn't be a problem. I'm pretty sure it's national forest past the mine with dispersed camping allowed.

    Have fun and ride safe!

Awesome thanks for the tip UncleMike :clap
Love this site! So in summary here is the lay of the land out close to Alma and we have some options out towards the Montgomery Reservoir down CO Rd4. We might need to camp lower down but I guess we will see what we find out there.......
