Wee Strom Brake Upgrade

    My 2006 wee's front brakes for lack of a better word, suck. They feel like I'm squeezing two pieces of wood blocks together against a piece of cardboard. They work, but lack modulation. Surprisingly the back brake is OK.

    The solution: Brake Up-Grade.

    I contacted Blake at SVRacing, he sent me everything I needed (except the calipers) to perform the much needed improvement. First off, I have no relationship with Blake of SVRacing so I am unbiased. I received the parts in a timely fashion and Blake spent 20minutes on the phone with me giving me detailed instruction on how to install them. The parts were perfect and everything bolted up easily. Thanks to Blake the bleeding procedure was much easier than I expected.

    I opted for Nissin calipers because they are bigger for a better bite! 90 bucks on Flea Bay. They were perfect. They came off a CBR 954.

    While I was waiting for the parts from SVRacing I cleaned up the rotors

    Here is all the stuff SVR sent, SS brake lines, all hardware, and new pads... Never, ever use the old pads!

    Sexy. It took me about 45 minutes to bleed the brakes and bada-bing, I was on the road. Sweet! And Baby Got Brakes!

    All in all I've got less than $450 into this project and it's best very best up-grade I've done to the wee so far. Next... suspension!

    So "decent pads" are as good as SS lines, 4 pot calipers and "decent pads"?

    Hmmm. Been riding motorcycles long?

    Ever ridden a Ducati or KTM RC8? Superduke? Aprilia Tuono? I have owned/ridden them all.. Yep... I really have... oh, and a 2006 WEEEEEE!

    Yeah... screw that technology garbage... drum brakes rule!!!

    The Wee's brakes aren't so hot. Yeah, we know, it's an adventure-tourer built to keep the price down. Sportbike brakes are a fuckin' sweet upgrade, but the bike is perfectly safe and enjoyable to ride for most of us without them. I'd like to have them but I'm too cheap so good pads are it, and I'll probably switch to SS lines sooner or later. To each his own.

    Some people just like their nuts to slam harder into the tank, and there's nothing wrong with a Wee that can do a stoppie :deal

    LOL - you guys are hilarious. OP never said anything about wanting to do stoppies or other such silliness. OP was looking for improved feel and modulation. 4 pot calipers with better pads and SS lines will improve feel and modulation. Will they improve overall brake performance (stopping distance) or make it "safer"? No... but that's not what he was looking for, nor was it what he claimed to have accomplished. Will good HH pads by themselves improve feel and modulation? Yes, but not as much by themselves as everything combined. Not sure why this even needs to be said, as this is all fairly common sense stuff.

    I've just installed EBC HH pads, front and rear on my Wee.

    Would conversion to SS lines offer a significant improvement?

    I appreciate the OPs major upgrade, but not sure I want to put that much into an older bike.

    Really would have liked to have done this on my old K4 wee (hated the mehhh brake feel myself:bluduh. and no, changing pads helped but didn't quite go the distance, for me). Didn't realize that the 954 calipers fit, thanks.

    I like the Wee Strom. Have ridden it quite a few times, but never owned one. The front brake is downright scary though. I was almost run over by a truck the first time I rode the bike, as I was accustomed to my 07 Tiger 1050 braking power. Seriously, the Wee's brakes are garbage and this improvement seems like the way to go. I can't imagine better pads doing the trick. Slight improvement? Maybe. Solution? No. The whole system is flawed. Excellent bike, but this was a big deal breaker for me, so I applaud any solution for serious improvement.

    I made this upgrade last month (well, just the calipers with SVRacing adapters, keeping the stock brakelines) and I highly recommend it. The calipers were $45 on EBay (not as clean as the OP's) and the swap was easy. The SVRacing parts are nicely finished and came with excellent HW.

    My stock calipers had EBC HH pads and I put the same in the new ones, so after a short ride to bed in the new pads, I could make a good apples-to-apples comparison. Much better feel, and lower lever effort. 800 miles later, I'm still loving it. As a reference, I also have an older Ducati with 4-pot Brembo's and the Strom is now pretty similar in overall front brake behavior. For the price of a new tire or 7 tanks of gas, a great investment.

    My braking was also significantly improved once I installed Blair's recommended 4-pot calipers with his adapters. I was able to re-use the stock brake lines through the use of a small spacer which relocated the brake fluid junction block back about an inch, but I'll go w/ stainless when it's time to replace the stockers. I'm noticing that slightly more of the rotor gets swept by the pads so that may be part of the reason for the better braking, but lever feel is hugely improved - no more planning your stops days in advance.

    Hang onto the stock left caliper, however - it works well with a 276mm Africa Twin rotor for someone who wants to upgrade their XR650L's front brake without stepping up to a 320mm supermoto set-up and isn't put off by having to fabricate an adapter bracket. This particular mod, BTW, results in a 33% increase in brake swept area for the XRL.

    I've done both the pads and the calipers.

    The pads were an improvement, the calipers were night and day difference, with a very nice 2 finger pull on the lever.

    The original poster went from OE calipers, presumably OE or OE type pads and OE lines to better pads, better lines and better calipers. I agree, it would be a night and day difference as compared to the OE stuff but I will bet that doing just the good pads and the SS lines with the OE calipers would have also been a night and day difference also. I also bet the pads and the lines were the root of most of that improvement. Seriously, the stock lines really do suck especially once they get some miles on them. But for the money, those Nissans are a great improvement for the money {90$ is a steal} especially if your OE calipers are getting tired anyway.:1drink

    1) Your gold Nissins are way prettier than the GSXR 750 Tokicos - not fair.

    2) The Nissin bleeder bolts appear to be better positioned to get more air out of the calipers - getting the Tokicos bled with the stock lines was a PITA.

    Once you get your forks set up the way that you want you'll be REALLY pleased.

    It's much better to use a nylon pad like Scotch-Brite or stainless steel or bronze wool than ordinary steel wool. Tiny fibers embed in the rotors and promote rust.
