What bike should I get? Ulysses?

    Well trading the Nightster isn't going to work, so I put it on ebay. Hopefully it sells the first go-round and then I'll just pay cash for the next bike.

    So as the Nightster's heading out... I'm digging back into the Buells for sale. One thing I just noticed is that there seems to be two different types of bags, big round 2 tone ones, and skinnier appearing all black ones. Any difference other than size? I think the small ones would be enough for me, are the two sets of equal quality/value?

    The two tone ones are Journeys and the black ones are Juniors Flash. Depending on the year you get, the latches are in different places on the racks. Early models are on the front of the racks and certain bags fit fine, the Juniors Flash iirc are shaped in a forward slope and look funny if on backwards.

    I had an 08 Ulysses XT and I enjoyed it for the most part. Rides good, plenty of torquey power and I had zero issues with it. The one thing that I could not stand that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is the heat from the front cylinder. It puts off crazy heat on the right side from the front cylinder that will roast your right thigh in the summertime and nearly as bad the rest of the year too. They make a kit that you can get that adds another ram air type scoop on the right side to try to direct airflow to the cylinder to help cool it more. Just wanted to make sure you knew about this issue before buying one. I unfortunately didn't do my research well and didn't find out until I was riding it home after I bought it.

    Ok, so the guy who bought the Nightster is coming this Saturday to pay and pick it up, so it's getting serious.
    Here's the ones I'm looking at.

    This 08 with 13k miles for 6150 on ebay from a dealer that may or may not be reputable. I know the auction's over, but I got the 2nd chance offer from ebay, I guess a deabeat bidder.

    An 08 with 10k miles and no bags(except a Buell soft bag that attaches to triple tail) for 5000, apparently had a minor down that only scratched one puck, rider kit installed, and the owner repainted the tank shroud looking thing and headlight shroud OD green.

    So any thoughts on these? I think I would like hard bags, but I'm not sure what the $ value of that should be. Cheaper is better to some degree, but I understand the value of an 08 vs 06.

    Just after I first sent this, my wife ruled out the 08 on ebay, because I'm getting 6k for the Nightster and she's dead set on not spending a cent more.

    1. Shorter 08+ seat - cost about $100-$150 to replace.
    2. Hard Bags - $600-$800 for a set of used ones.
    3. RH Comfort Kit - $200

    I'd go for the OD 08 first, then as second choice the 06 from the fellow inmate.

    Talked to the owner of the 06 in Edmond, OK. It's bone stock, except the previous owner rattle-canned the tank shroud thing and headlight shroud.

I have owned my '06 Uly for over seven and half years. I know some have ridden their Ulys more miles than I have, especially lately as life has gotten in the way of riding. That said I have just over 60,000 miles on mine and can easily say it has been the best bike I have ever owned and could easy compare to any Japanese or European bike out there. I say that just after replacing the engine in my 2008 Honda Accord, so my personal experience of the Uly is better than that vehicle. The Uly has held up better than the CB750 I had before it. So I do not share the same sacred cow view about products from the land of the rising sun some here have. Do not misunderstand me, I like and want many bikes from companies like Kawasaki or Yamaha, like the Tenere, just saying that every manufacturer out there can produce an excellent bike and a lemon.

    As for my Uly, it has never let me down, though I cannot say the same about the rider. I have experienced some of the common issues like clutch cable holder breaking, one of the bag latches broke and had engine knock the first 1000 miles. Warping brake rotors is the only issue I still have with the bike and will contact EBR as soon as I can afford the upgraded rotor, still recouping from the Honda repair. I also have a fared exhaust valve cable. so the valve does not completely close, which makes the bike rumble a bit which is cool, but bottom end power is off a bit. I did break a final drive belt at 40,000 miles. It happened on my road and coasted home. The belt showed signs of wear for 10,000 miles before failing. I wanted to know how long the belt would go so I bought a replacement belt and waited for it to fail. I would suggest a 30,000 mile belt replacement cycle. I did replace the front wheel bearings after testing during a tire change and found them a bit stiff. The common rear wheel bearing problem has not been an issue on this bike and still has the original OEM rear wheel bearings.

    For some time I did a fuel mileage chart on-line and averaged over 48mpg for more than 10,000 miles. Worst tank full fuel mileage was 40mpg and best 62mpg. I did manage to run out of gas once and found that the bike will go 38.4 miles on reserve. Fuel mileage has dropped over the past year and average about 40mpg in strict to and from work mode, but at 60,000 miles I need to replace filters and plugs and have not done it yet.

    I have ridden mostly on pavement, but have had the Uly on dirt roads and even complete off road, jumping ditches and into fields. The Uly can go places pure street bikes cannot go but it is not a dirt bike either. I have followed more dirt oriented bikes off the beaten path and the most obvious outcome is your friends on more dirt oriented bikes will have to wait for you at the end of the trail. That said, you will be able to repay their kindness when you wait for them at the end of a twisty paved road. I have more than once completely set sail and ran away from friends R1200GS, KLR, Vstroms etc. I have not ridden with any KTMs on twisty roads but did get to test ride Adventure 990 down US60 from Suches GA with 80/20 tires and there is no comparison on pavement (the same could be said the other way on dirt).

    Straight line the Uly was never a drag bike. Though to me the bike has plenty of useable power at just about any RPM, the more time goes by the more the Uly falls behind. On my last ride with friends, one on a K1600GT and the other on a Connie 14, we hit it on a straight section and I watch the others pull away fast. At lunch I stated that the Connie seemed to pull the Beemer at full throttle, confused my friends looked back at me and asked, "who was at full throttle?" Of which I replied, "ME!" At least I got better fuel mileage.

    As for comfort I have ridden the Uly from Indiana to North Carolina in a day. On that trip I got off the beaten path and played in the Virginia and West Virginia mountains. Other than one extended stop for dinner, that day I rode from 9am to mid-night and logged 720 miles. I have upgraded to the '07 and newer seat. It has worked the best for me, but some with longer legs than me prefer the standard '06 seat. All this said I find the Uly comfortable for 300 mile days. I have many days over 500 miles, but I would not consider them completely comfortable. For a factory seat, the Buell seat is very good, but Monkey butt will creep in after a couple of tank fulls.

    As some have mentioned here, the Uly is easy to work on and very tough. I have dropped the bike a half dozen times, a couple more dramatic than others, and have been able to repair damages on my own and continue to ride. The availability of information is probably the greatest advantage to owning a Uly. Parts and Service manuals are readily available, as well as a plethora of on-line information.

    I hope all this helps in purchasing decisions. This household has owned Buells for over nine years with three currently in the barn. I know I have truly enjoyed owning these bikes and plan to own them for some time to come. But when the time comes for me to put down money on another bike, more than likely it will not be a Buell. I like to ride distances and my next bike will more than like be from one of the Japanese or European makes and the main reason is dealer coverage.

    There was one other bike I had been looking at that wasn't in my post, an 09 xt with 9500 miles, corbin and factory seat, madstadd and stock windshield, comfort kit, all the bags, etc. But he wanted too much, so I emailed him and told him I was sorry for wasting his time, but my wife set a firm budget of $6000. He said if I could get it to him this weekend it was mine. So Saturday the guy who won my Nightster on ebay came to get it. He actually drove non-stop from Manitoba with his brother. So I figured if they could do that, I could drive to the Southeast corner of Missouri on Sunday and get the Buell.
    So here she is back home in my driveway...

    Get out the owner's manual and set the suspension based on your weight- it can make a huge difference in the bike's handling. Never hurts to check the air in the tires either.

    Oh, yea, the best way to check the oil in the 08-up Buells is with the engine hot & idling and the bike on the side stand. If you check it with the engine off, some oil will usually run back from the swingarm to the engine sump before you can get off the bike and check it and it'll consistently read low. DON'T try to keep it full to the top of the dipstick; middle of the range is fine.
