Found this out in the barn and wondering if it is worth cleaning with some elbow grease, or a more conservative way. The dirt is pretty caked on and rather gritty, so I do not want to risk damage if it should be on a shelf instead of a dog bowl.

It does make a 'clean' ping when struck.

Rinsed out a bit of the dirt

I'm guessing pre WW II, or maybe "occupied Japan".
There ought to be Asian art experts in your neck of the woods.
Look into it, it may well finance your next bike:D

If it was "occupied Japan" there would be a stamp saying that.

It is OK if there are 3 right? Trying to get in touch with someone from the art depo at school, but their answers might be less entertaining.

The marks on the back are likely a crest of a sort on the right and the left one is dog and monkey which together refer to the Chinese zodiac. On the front the kanji are really stylized or artsy - that is hard to read as a whole meaning. What is important in terms of value is the maker who has placed his mark - the red "stamp" like kanji - on the one side. You would have to take it to an expert to see if it is from a known artest.

I lived in japan a few years, the colors are typical of green kutani (9 valleys) porcelain. The man looks like Daruma but he usually sitting not standing. Is there a kiln mark on the bottom of the plate? I have a book, but it gives me a headache since I forgot how to read.

Of course it could be chinese replica as well, it looks hand drawn vs stencil. Ping is usually bone porcelain which makes it stronger, it seems to have been in the kiln at least twice since it appears to have a green tint glaze.

You are right those colors are typical of Kutani-yaki (red, yellow, green, purple and dark blue). I live close by and have enjoyed going to the festival every year durring golden week - coming soon!

    Good luck identifying the bowl!

Thanks for the replies. Got in touch with a ceramics guru on campus so I should know more shortly. Hopefully he won't ask me to bring it in because at 2ft wide it won't find on the bike. No other markings besides what is shown. I think it will go on the shelf whatever the outcome is.
