I just got a "new" Darien off of Craigslist. It has a shit-ton of pockets. I know, I know, nothing hard or fragile, but other than that, what do you keep in your jacket pockets?

So far I have: Registration, insurance, and photocopy of license in the small pocket under the reflective tab; chapstick in the sleeve pocket; visor cloth in the breast pocket; ipod in the inside chest pocket with custom earbuds if I'm not wearing them; a couple of Gu packs in the lower outside pockets (quick energy). Change and some cash will probably get dumped in one at some time. I may keep a small pocket knife in a lower or the sleeve pocket, just because I'm used to having one handy and my Dakar pants don't have a place for one...

    So; empty your pockets...

Smith and Wesson Bodyguard .380 in a pocket holster. I know you should't have hard things in your pockets, but it's in the side pocket of the jacket where if I fall it won't be against any bones. Sometimes I'll keep my phone in my other side pocket, but usually everything gets put in my tank box.

Great question to ask aloud. :ear

I like to have lens cleaner with the lens cloth (for glasses, sunshades, visors)
a lighter, a small flashlight, and spare keys, neck tube (turtle fur) and balaclava rear seat pocket perhaps with rain liner for pants. Also business cars and small pen in left cuff sleeve pocket.

But I know where my stuff is (especially flashlight) to find with eyes closed.

I've never carried anything in a jacket pocket, ever. And if my jackets never had pockets I wouldn't mind in the least.

Most small things that I read carried in pockets, I carry a tank bag.

A lot of what you put in your pockets I put in my tankbag. But for my Darien:

The small "logo pocket" has spare earplugs.

Below that in the left breast pocket is wallet and change. (Wallet has spare MC key.)

Right pocket is bandanas -- 1 or 2. Rarely there is a very small camera in there.

For longer rides I put a credit card in the right sleeve pocket. Usually it's empty since the sleeve velcro works better if that pocket can easily fold.

EDIT: Aerostich doesn't claim that any of the outside pockets are waterproof. I usually have another bandana in an inside pocket (the side-opening one) and when it rains I move my wallet inside to the top-opening pocket.

Hopefully, the keys to my bike when I am dismounted.

Love my Darien, but find those "slash" pockets annoying round the waist area. Just me I bet, but I prefer the sqaureed top type pockets that stuff did not fall out of when left upzapped.

Those are flat (not pleated) and they need to fold for me to sit on a bike. I acknowledge that those are actually pockets, but for me they are totally useless. A. Goldfine writes that he puts his 3-fingered rain covers in those, but I find the pockets too small for even those. There are even handwarmer pockets behind the flapped-and-zipped ones, but I don't use those either.

Cell phone with earbuds so I can listen to the music player app while riding.
    Wallet.
Eyeglasses/sunglasses case, although a lot of the time I keep this in my topcase.
Spare foam ear plugs (in case I'm not listening to music on my phone.)
Keys (when I'm off the bike.)

I occasionally put a P&S camera in my pocket when I'm riding, but usually they're empty. My next jacket will have fewer pockets...

Wallet, cash, phone, soft paper towels (instead of kleenex) and keys when I'm off the bike.. That's pretty much it for the jacket. Butt-wipes, food/drink/maps/chargers and flashlight in the tank bag and everything else in the boxes. At least that's how it worked on my last long-ish trip.
