Looking for a 17mm ball to mount my Nuvi 550 on. I don't need/want any sort of arm/riser/etc. If I could find a 17mm ball that has a hold through it, I can run one of the riser bolts on my bike through that, and mount directly. Am I dreaming?

I'm almost ready to by a standard suction mount, cut the ball off of it, and drill my own hole.

Someone must make something along these lines, no?

    TIA

Go to McMaster.com, search for "steel" or "plastic" depending on the material you want, click on "ball", then narrrow down depending on options. You'll have to convert 17mm into fractional inches to find a ball nearest that size. You'll have to drill the hole yourself. For plastic, you'll need a steel sleve to tighten down on.

Any ram-mount dealer can get or has the 17mm ball that threads into a 10mm bolt. Saw one at tellico outfitter not long ago. Minimike is the owner and fellow inmate.

    Mount (replacement) -

The little ball is attached to the other part with a bolt.

    Worked for me.

That looks like it could work perfectly. Thanks Denny!

You might need to enlarge the hole, the ball is made of plastic so not too difficult to work with. I used it to make a 1" ball to 17mm ball adapter so I could use a Ram mount in my truck instead of the Garmin suction cup mount.

Looks like a dumbell with one ball smaller than the other.

I know you asked about the 17mm hard plastic ball which is the standard ball that is used by Garmin on their cheaper mounts but.....

The RAM 25mm rubber ball system works much better, is more adaptable and is priced right.

I prefer to use #68 or #67 on the riser bolt.

I saw this old thread about a search for 17 mm balls to adapt Nuvi/Zumo mounts and wondered if anybody has info on where to find one. Google search for Akron finds lots of things, including a town in Ohio, but nobody that sells these.

BTW, I found just waht I was looking for, a 17 mm ball to Garmin standard ball adapter at GPS City. Ordered two of them.

You might want to take a second look. The way I understand that item the RAM end is not a normal 1" ball, it is a snap-in ball.
