I just came across this thread and I've got one that came off my 92 R100RT and I don't need it (or the RT either...anybody lookin for one?). I'll try and get a few shots of it over the weekend and post 'em here.

I already have the file of the pattern but i'm having some problems because I do not have the software to open it. it is on PWstudio3 and my tailor can't change it to other software. Any ideas?

Do try converting the file to *.dxf. It is a standard cadd tranfer protocol and certainly suitable for such as a simple outline pattern.

Are these really that rare? I have a mustang one for a K bike that looks very similar (quilting and all). I never owned a K bike, it was just in a pile of stuff I "inherited" from a deceased friend. Actually, here is a good question - will the K bike covers fit an R80 if they are both the same year (1986)?

Re-energizing this post. Just curious if anyone knows of anywhere I could get a mustang cover (or mustang look-a-like)?

I'm specifically looking for the ones with a checker pattern back half. I think my /7 would love to have that tank cover.

I picked up one similar, but it wasn't anywhere near the quality of the Mustang... I ended up throwing it away and buying a Bagster.

Expensive and you have to wait for it to arrive from overseas, but it's damn robust.

What is the deal with the side stand out when the bike is on the center stand? If the bike falls off of the center stand, the side stand is NOT going to catch it.

Do these covers fit the large /6 tanks or only the /7 style tanks? Was there such a thing as a cover for the large /6 tanks?

These guys out of California sell Bagster tank covers for airheads and newer BMW's : http://www.rideaddict.com/tankprotectors-bmwrandom.aspx

Never used them, but I am also interested in a Bagster (or similar quality) tank cover. Motobins sells a tank cover, but I have found (even though they appear to speak English) there is something lost in the email translation when asking questions about such items. BTW, I generally like doing business with Motobins. Here is a link to the Motobins cover: http://www.motobins.co.uk/displayfinal.php?q=91860&topsearch=1&go=GO

The ones featured fit the /7 tanks.

I've never seen one for a /6 but that doesn't mean they don't exist. A local upholster could make one...or 10 cheaper per item. They will sell. That's what I did.

Just met a guy 30 minutes ago to look at some airhead rims from his dad's R100s and he had a box of pristine take-off parts. One of the items he had was this exact tank cover, in blue, in the original package. If anyone is interested, PM me and I will give you his email address. He's in L.A. I took a couple of photos and will upload them later.

edit; here they are. Again, this was brand new in the package, circa mid-80's?

If you're very patient, they will pop up on Ebay and IBMWR from time to time, although less so as time goes by. I've found 2 for the R65 and 1 for an R80ST, both oddball sizes for low production bikes. Quilted with side pockets, the R65 covers had a clear map cover on the top. Wish I'd had the foresight to have a few more made after the last R65. :doh

Can one of you tell me the purpose of these tank covers? I can see that if your tank had minor dings, dents, scratched paint, etc, you could hide the defects. Is there any other reason to use them? Are they just considered cool in BMW circles?
