I have a nearly new handgun I'd like to sell. I want to do this responsibly and not see it fall into the hands of bad guys.
I don't imagine dealers will offer as much as a private sale. How does one go about this?

Lots of gun shops have a consignment counter where you can have them handle the sale.

Pawn shops are good for a quick sale too.

If you want to maximize your return, gunbroker.com is a good way to go. Out of state sales have to be shipped to a FFL dealer who will do a background check as part of the transfer, usually for $25.00. In state private sales don't require a background check, but if you want it done most shops will broker the deal and do a check for $25.00.

Gun shows are another option...rent a table, or carry around a sign stating what you're selling, then have the background check done at the show....state law prohibits private sales without a background check being done if the initial contact was made at a gun show.

No, but I'd like to be. I don't want to get cute with the rules around here but I'd prefer to do business with a fellow ADVer

    Uh, no.

Look, there are practically no rules on ADV, but weapons is one of them. A thinly disguised effort like this is pretty junior varsity.

Not going to ban or boot, but will do to the next one.

I used armslist.com with good results. It's modeled like craigslist except it's for guns, and the listings are by entire state rather than cities.

Like CJ said, if you want to go through an FFL for an instate sale, there's nothing stopping you.

I second Armslist. Seems like the couple times I used it the deals went good.
You mileage may vary of course.

Great resource. I listed the Airweight and immediately began receiving offers and just sold it.
    Thanks for the tip guys.

armslist is the craigslist of the gun world, I stay away. I either use GunBroker, CO-AR15.com, or AR15.com.

I began to receive offers on the gun five minutes after posting on Armslist. Met the guy at our agreed upon spot, exchanged ID's, I wrote bills of sale for each of us, he handed me my asking price - all good.

Armslist is very iffy. For instance if you sell your gun to somebody on Armslist and he commits a crime, then you might get the blame for something. At least get a notarized bill of sale if you do transfer this way. I would never do a transfer except at at gunshop who is an FFL. You have already done the deed, but others seem to think this is a good way to go.

Only offer to sell to someone with CHL.

New guns are going for more than list due to the fact its 7 days to wait for a background check.

Assuming the gun is an ok piece.

    Don't make this complicated.

I am not an attorney nor am I providing legal advice.

If I were to sell a gun to someone I do not know personally, in a private transfer, I might excerpt section A of form 4473 for the buyer to fill out. Also, a notarized bill of sale might be a required part of the sale. CYA.

jasonsguns.com but it may only be for NM. I do not know how it works or what it costs or anything about it :deal

I think the background checks should be available for private sellers to do to protect themselves. Going thru an FFL is a good idea and they should be paid for their efforts.

You may be able to consign it thru an FFL. I have used an FFL here that will do a transfer for $10.00.
