    I still keep the maps and grease pencils in the bag but lately I jumped to from Garmins to an Android smartphone with Locus Pro and OsMand+ on it.
    It's slick, nifty and waterproof. It don't need a laptop with Basecamp to upload tracks or plan routes. You just do that stuff right on the phone.

    I've been using my smartphone as a GPS in my car for ages... starting with the original iPhone 4... that did have some issues back in the day.
    Tried it on the bike, but it had several shortcomings (iPhone 5 at the time then)... and stuck with my montana.
    Then recently (now on an S7 Samsung android) I've gone all smartphone GPS on bike and car.
    use a RAM X-Grip and a charging port.

    Software wise a combination:
    - City either Google Maps or TomTom's Android app when I need longer more complex routes or complete offline navigation)
    - Travel and planning of routes: OsmAnd+ (and sometimes Locus).
