I've been wanting another GS for a few months so came back to ADV to start my search. I'm amazed at all the broken bike threads! I don't have thousands of $ to upgrade/modify/FIX a factory GS. So my enthusiasm is quickly draining for a bike, that while it has a loyal following, appears to spend more time down than being ridden!

So, should I drop my hunt for a GS/A and just go with the Yammie Tenere.......my enthusiasm for things German is fading.:(::(::(:

In my humble opinion, people usually go on forums to complain or get help with their bike when they have a problem. ANY bike on ANY forum will appear worse than it actually is. Some go on to get farkle advice or to actually praise their bikes, but the majority will cause you to worry. I bought my first BMW before forums really existed. Had they been around, I might have had plenty of worries. But instead I just bought it and enjoyed it for 16 completely (and I mean completely) trouble free years. I remember asking the dealer at the time what kind of maintenance the bike required, and he actually said 'none, just change the oil and ride it'. So, ignorantly, I rode it. I never once changed the FD oil (he says sheepishly) and it never presented a problem. Get what you think you will enjoy most, stir up the most passion in you.

You can find the same thing on any forum for any bike or any vehicle for that matter really.

People who don't have issues, don't complain... Any bike or car that is sold in high numbers is going to seem like it has tons of things wrong with it because you have a big pool from which to gather complaints and a convenient place to discuss them. Don't let that fact turn you off from something you want however.

A GS definitely isn't the cheapest bike in the world to buy or to maintain but you really don't need thousands of dollars to maintain it especially if you do a lot of the work yourself. My GS has more miles on it than my latest car, which I picked up about the same time, and other than needing a new rear tire soon, hasn't cost me much other than basic service items and some time sitting in the garage fiddling about.

It's like comment cards in a restaurant or feedback on amazon. You will see the extremes the satisfied median just don't say much, I have ridden the GSA hard broke some stuff but fix what I break, I have had minor issues that just happen such as fuel strips and a bad fuel pump controller.

I've had my share of tip overs and still love it. Great bike. :D

Great replies...makes perfect sense too about airing problems on a forum - DOH!

OK, so I'm heading to Reno Sierra BMW to see what they have!

All things mechanical can break! The most maintained piece of equipment in the universe is the Space shuttle. It has blown up twice! It is not that the GS breaks down more. BMW owners just expect them not to. I also have a Harley people never worry about them breaking , they expect them to.

Like everyone has already stated, its the internet and people use it bitch more than praise.

Besides, if Ducati finally can put together a decent working bike, so can BMW, and they have been for alot longer than the Italians.

Buy with confidence, and im not even a fan of German engineering.

Stinkin things, mine is broken too...well...maybe removing the bodywork to get it painted does not count as broken. Probably counts as stupid planning though.
