I like them too, but there's not room in my garage for more than one sidecar rig.
But there's never a good reason to pass up an opportunity to joke.
Because you'll never really be able to track your mileage (kilometerage?)
Guess I get to get a brand new odometer. Guess that means my Ural will have zero km. Time to really clean up and sell this "low mileage" Ural at a heavy discount. "Three years old, warranty just about to expire, but it's never been ridden, and this can be all yours for about half the price of a brand new 2018 model."
How many of your Uralheads know what "ГОСТ" means?
Google translate says it means "guest" in Bulgarian. Seems to fit, in a punny sort of way. Like if using the speedometer, swinging all around, you have to guess your actual speed. So if I've used the speedometer, and now a non-working odometer, I've guessed (guest).
What's it really mean?
GOST from the Cyrillic stands for the Russian Standards organization. It is the Russian word for guest minus a "b" at the end, which means to pronounce the T quietly.... So ends our Russian lesson for the day. Спасибо ! ....LOL....
"State Standard". Everything made in USSR had an approved standard. No wonder there was shortage of everything.
ASTM has 12000 standards.
No shortages resulting that I'm aware of.
In my on again off again quest contemplating a Ural CT, I demo'd a gearup for a second time. Fueling was much better than the 2015 I first rode. Emmm that burgandy.. had water over my boots and did some urban hill climbing. Seriously one of the most fun rainy days I've ever had. Do I really want to give up my beloved Bolt C spec?!
"Do I really want to give up my beloved Bolt C spec" ?!
Yes..........Yes you do
"Seriously one of the most fun rainy days I've ever had"
You shouldn’t buy a Ural motorcycle.
You should buy TWO Ural motorcycles
If you're going to be sticking with urban, you DON'T want the GU. The cT has so much better road manners.
Do you need to give up your Bolt?
Yes, the cT and M70 have some handling advantages, but here in the PNW 2wd can have some advantages too. Some of the most fun I've had has been those occasions when having 2wd made a real difference. One option I considered was to special order a Gear-up with 18" wheels to kind of split the difference.
I finally decided on a M70 for my new rig because of the better handling, but I also decided to keep my 2wd patrol.
Since 2002 all I've ever owned were 2wd Urals starting with my 99 Patrol
Didn't give a hoot about the 1wd models
As a matter of fact it wasn't uncommon for the TurTal to poke a little fun at the 1wd riders....usually something like "Hey...you know if it's not 2wd it's not a real Ural....right"
Fast forward a bit and I bought my little redhead a first year efi 2014 T
I did some TurTal mods that she wanted then took it on a 2 day shakedown
I couldnt believe the difference in handling...braking...acceleration...hell man it did everything better than my 08 Gup or 07 Patrol and I've got some serious money and mods tied up in those puppies
Bottom line....I was glad to be wrong about the 1wd models
Their awesome and if you set one up properly it will give the 2wd a run for its money off road
How impressed was I?....I told her I will buy you a new CT if I can keep the T for testing all my newer mods
It's a decision I have yet to regret
Either way you're going to have fun
The CT is just an all around friendlier machine imho
The M70 even more so....plus a splash of class and sophistication
With that said...it is fun to watch the 2wd roost the earth....that never gets old
Sorry guys, I left out that if I get one it will be a CT. I do want the sportier handling. Despite me having lots of MX experience, I don't want to get gnarly offroad, some drifts, chair flying and gravel roads are enough for me.
DMC Sidecars emailed me back, $3500 for a Sputnik for my bolt, plus $650 for disc brake, plus time and money mounting universal mount kit. Think I'd rather find a deal on a CT and risk having to make periodic repairs. I love the D Side Bolt built by Deus but I don't think I have time or money to recreate it:
Just curious... what kind of mods did you do to your 1wd?
I have 06 and 11 GearUps
but I am thinking about adding a road going model. I live in the mountains at 6000ft and go down to sea level on occasion. We do get snow which is why I want the 2wd... but a 1wd with so chains (that I bought years ago) should get me where I want to go.
I could see my 06 becoming my parade bike (just needs a machine gun ;-), the 11 being armored for off road in the desert and the CT as my day to day driver in the mountains and cities.
You're never going to get a Sputnik to look like that, no matter how much money you throw at it!
I don't think I'd put a brake on a Sputnik, attached to a Bolt...maybe, but I'd drive it without first. MY sidecar weighs twice what a Sputnik does, and I don't have a brake on it. But I'll admit, there have been a few times I wish it had one. A Bolt with a Sputnik will keep up with freeway traffic.
Sidecar brake is a nice to have on a heavy outfit. Definitely not needed on a Sputnik.
Don’t hack the Bolt unless you’re ready to quit riding on two wheels. Spend that money on a used Ural instead, or a complete non-Ural rig.
If you lie in wait, you’ll be surprised as to how much bike you can get for $4k! Check the for sale thread in this forum on the regular.
Don't worry I won't ever give up two wheels completely, I have a 2012 super tenere. I enjoy riding the bolt more with it's loud pipe and quick turning, but st is more practical. Ural dealer can only get 2018 models at this point which don't qualify for $1k off promo. Appearently they got a new gearbox over the 2017 models. If only they were $10k new and or I was rich.
