If any one goes out to Windorah, can you please take a photo of the air-conditoining set up in the pub, its a beauty and I wish I had got a photo of it when I was there. Can you please post it up here.
    Thanks

I heard Merv the blind mechanic from the servo retired. He's a top bloke, he helped me out a few years ago with a stuffed rear diff in my Landcruiser. Windorah's a top place! :clap

Bought fuel from Merv last year on the Birdsville trip. Amazing seeing him measure the notes against his "scale" to tell what they are when you pay him.

    Sharp as a tack too!

If your ever at the pub and see a older gent with pearly white teeth and a gravely voice named Sandy, buy him a beer and listen to some of the best yarns you will ever hear from a man born and bred on the channel country. Sandy Kidds family has been around those parts for over 110 years , he's a walking encyclopedia. He used to have a pet razorback that you could put your feet up on as a foot rest in his lounge room :lol3 Honest John.

Looks like a three point turn with a good LSD or somebody forgot to unlock their rear diff.

He was still serving fuel in September after OCR. Doesn't do any more mechaniking though. His missus is not happy!! She now has to do that work.

I listened to an interview with Merv on ABC radio last week and he has pulled up stumps on the servoand retired.
Does anyone know if the servo will still be operating??

Yep, called it quits last Friday according to ABC RN.

Sad to see him go, he had a great outlook on life.

Do you really believe anything from the ABC ?

He had a room adjacent to the Servo that I've stayed, not the Ritz but a bed when the pub is full. There's a lady who serves fuel that is a regional identity but whose name I can't remember.

But a great place to visit on the way somewhere.

Can't help with a pic of the Air Con.but as everyones got a story about Windorah here's mine.

Back in June 2000, I decided to ride a mountain bike frm Charleville to the Burke & Wills dig tree. via Birdsville & the Cordillo rd. My biggest problem was carrying enough water.I managed to get 22 1/4 ltre on. When i arrived at Windorah, I stayed a Chumpy Wardscabins .He was the local postie. ( now retired after 38yrs ) when he heard of my plans he not only offered his tank water but also to drop a few extra ltrs out to the betoota pub for me. ( about 200km west)

On arrival at Betoota the water was there. I met Zigi Remienko, then 84yrs old. ( he was once stranded on the birdsville track with 8tons of beer for 18weeks) Zigi showed me through his pub/ home . everything was left as the last day of trade , now covered in a heavy layer of dust .. What a privilage. I pushed on to Birdsville, it took me 3days to cover the 398km. if I had not collected the additional water Chumpy had left I would have arrived with 1 1/2ltres. ( drinking 7ltre a day).As it turned out this ridewas a bit too ambitious & I gave it away at Birdsville. ( see crazy guy on a bike..solo into the outback. )

Sept 2011. Iwas determined to ride the Cordillo rd, this time on a motorcycle. I made it my business to look up Chumpy again. He remembered me after 12yrs. we hada long chat . these guys that live in this part of australia are good men, will help if possible, and have more stories to tell than pages to write them on.

PS the steak I had at the Windorah pub was bigger than the plate they served it on.

Wow, braver than most! I recently met two Spaniards doing the Canning Stock Route on bicycles with trailers, crazy!!

They are really good people in these remote locations. Cheers to all of them! :1drink

Why wouldn't I believe the ABC? They are a far more reliable source of information than the commercial talk back stations who seem more intent on inventing stories in order to fill the pockets of their broadcasters.
