As you recall, the DNR has been working on a Recreational Opportunities Analysis. Many key recreation representatives, including myself, have been working with them on this project. Previously, the DNR offered meetings and the opportunity for public comment in the Northwoods Region. Largely based on the comments many of you submitted, public input indicated there was a great need for additional opportunities for motorized recreation in that region.

Soon, the DNR will hold meetings and take public input in two additional regions. The two areas being addressed now are the Upper Lake Michigan Coastal Region and the Great Northwest Region. The ULMC includes the following counties: Marinette, Oconto, Brown, Door, Kewaunee, and Manitowoc. The Great Northwest includes: Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, Polk, Barron, and Rusk.

Now is the time to submit your remarks concerning recreational opportunities in these two regions. I am providing a link to the DNR ROA page below. While on that page you will find links to online input forms for both regions. You will also find listings for open house meetings: Aug 22 Sturgeon Bay, Aug 23rd Crivitz, Aug 28th Ashland, Aug 29th Siren, and Aug 30th Ladysmith. The open house meetings are great for face to face discussions, but what is really important is that our needs and preferences get properly recorded via the on-line forms.

Please get the word out for off-highway motorcyclists to comment about their desire to have more OHM riding opportunities in these regions. The link to the DNR ROA page is below. Look for the two on-line input forms. It is important for us to be visible and establish a record of our needs. As before, I will be submitting detailed written input for both of these regions.

The draft amendment to the Master Plan for the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest came out today. I have been on the phone with a couple of officials about some concerns I have for off-highway motorcyclists. Much of the language looks fine, but we need to take a better approach for the potential for a single track motorcycle trail in the forest some time in the future. We scheduled a meeting to address OHM concerns and hopefully we will be able to get it all worked out.

The comment period is Aug 17 to Sep 17. After I meet with the DNR, I'll offer some information here about submitting comments to the DNR about the plan. The amendment and related maps can be found on the web page below. There is also a link to submit comments that we can get to once I get some things sorted out in the meeting.

You will note that they talk about preferred dual sport routes and possibly marking dual sport routes in the forest. They use my NHAL GPS track that many of you have ridden many times as an example.

Please submit comments to the DNR in a polite and professional manner concerning OHM/DS in the NHAL. Please don't attack any other user groups as it goes against us in the end.

You will want to tell them:

-that you support the changes that allow OHM use on any ATV trails that come into being in the forest and that you would oppose being excluded from those trails. (box 1)

-you oppose any language that might somehow restrict the development of a single track motorcycle trail. (box 2)

-that you would like to see a single track motorcycle trail system developed on the property that would be available for limited use motorcycles as well as dual sports. (box 3)

-how you spent X days riding GPS guided paths on primitive forest roads, how much you enjoyed it, and how important this opportunity is for you. You will want to add that the riding opportunities contributed to your traveling to this area on vacation or for recreation. (box 4)

Thanks in advance for contributing in a positive and meaningful way. Perhaps people could put a "like" on this post after they submit their comments so we can see how many people responded.

Thank you for supporting our recreational interest.

Just to help some riders understand how things work in the recreation world, the trail safety council for Vilas County (made up of various user groups) met this week. The Recreation Deputy Sheriff reported on the dual sport vs. truck accident (even though it was a highway accident). This led to some discussion about dual sporters.

I thought it was best to mention this to help inculcate a sense of accountability for everything we do or that happens. Things don't just go away once we leave. :D

Had a council meeting today to consider grants from the ATV trail project fund which jumped up this year to $5M instead of the usual $3M+ we normally deal with. Long arduous day. I think we went through about $3M. The remainder we earmarked for some future major bridge projects and lesser bridge upgrades in the next year.

Got drafted today to be part of an advisory team regarding a DNR project pertaining to ATV/UTV trails. I think we need to plow through this project before we will get to formalizing the OHM trail standards. This is a good thing for all motorized recreation and I'm happy to be able to contribute with our ATV/UTV motorized family.

I submitted detailed documents to the DNR regarding the recreation opportunities analysis for these two regions (GNW and ULMC) as they pertain to OHM. We really need individuals to complete the on-line surveys expressing your fervent desire to have more OHM riding opportunities in the two regions being looked at this time around. Numbers of commenters mean a lot. We need to show we are anxious to increase opportunities.

In the NW region, the dual sport club in Eau Claire needs to push it with their members. Also, the Valley Springs club.

In the NE region, the Wisconsin Dual Sport Riders club members and all the people that have enjoyed the Wabeno rides need to get their input in.

You will want to tell them that you are anxious to develop a single track OHM trail in each of the regions. You will also want to tell them that you enjoy dual sport riding where it is allowed in these regions and that you are looking for more opoortunities and access to forest roads and trails in support of that. On the ROA page, there are two links (one for each region) that you can click to submit your input.

It means a lot when I go into to work these issues with the DNR when we have a lot of people on the record via these surveys. Please take a few moments to get this done. Thank you.

Something for trail riders to be aware of. Trail dust in the UP and northern Wisconsin can contain a fungus that can produce a medical problem for some people. Recently a rider suffered a wound that wouldn't heal, multiple lesions, and some serious medical issues because of this. Sometimes it can be mistaken for MRSA or something else. Some riders may want to consider a dust mask to help prevent this rare disease or other more common and routine respiratory infections or irritations. I've taken to using a mask in very dusty ATV conditions myself. Information on the disease is at the link. Just creating awareness in the event someone suffers a problem sometime. https://www.michigan.gov/…/Blastomycosis_Michigan_Case_Def_…

See Doug's post here for his story.

An easy breathing dust mask is here.

Might not be so rare after all. Guy responding of FB post about this said he had it three times and it was serious.

And this has happened to just how many people ?

I can see it all now. People keep talking about this even though they have no proof that there's even anything in the ground causing a problem. Then some politician gets a hold of it and that shuts down every trail in the state until tests and studies can be done.

No more riding. The greenies will be happy.

I have had one good buddy die and another was near death because of Blastomycosis. Both incidents were from yard work. Maybe the greenies can ban yard work.

Apparently more people in our community have gotten this than one might think. Looking at a few comments on the WOHMA FB page reveals one mountain bike rider that got it three times and another rider that knew two people that got it (one of which died).

The CDC Says: "Wisconsin may have the highest incidence of blastomycosis of any state, with yearly rates ranging from 10 to 40 cases per 100,000 persons in some northern counties."

The purpose of the post is to create awareness. If you read Doug's story, one of his concerns is that it took a while for the right doctor to make the right diagnosis.

Beyond this particular disease is the notion of sometimes using a dust mask to cut down on respiratory infections or irritation due to dust which is a much more common ailment. There are many spores in forest trail dust. The source of the specific spore that relates to blastomycosis is well known.

A call to action! I met with the DNR in Madison this week about OHM in the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest in north central WI. I also participated in the meeting in Arbor Vitae this evening. I am working to ensure we are properly represented in the plan. What needs to happen right now is A LOT of riders need to send in comments saying: they want single track motorcycle trails in the NHAL, they want access to all motorized trails and routes there, and they want maximum access to department roads on the property. It is very important that we show significant numbers in support of this. I am working on two future OHM trails on the property but for things to move forward we need a lot of comments telling them how much we need trails there. Please fill out the survey as soon as you can. If you search WI DNR MASTER PLANS you can find the NHAL and a downloadable form you can mail in if you can't get in the on-line survey. Please pass the word with shares. WI clubs please notify your members to submit their remarks requesting trails via this survey. You may not ride there today, but if there are OHM trails there in the future you probably will. Make sure you state your desires for trails there.

As a side note, they had a poster board of my NHAL dual sport route on display there demonstrating the concept of preferred and marked paths for dual sport riders in the forest. They also told the people at the presentation that this track had been downloaded around 11,000 times so there was great interest in riding in the NHAL. This kind of path is described in the plan as well.

For what it's worth: I'm remembering a case from some years back when a teacher and a group of school children were infected with blastomycosis from handling interesting bits of decayed wood in a forest somewhere out of Green Bay. While I don't doubt the presence of these spores in dust in the woods, my impression was that they would be more easily contracted from rotted wood, which might also square with the above account of people getting it while doing yard work. Again, this is from my sketchy memory and a hunch, not to be taken as medical fact.

Sounds like there are a lot of anecdotes about the disease out there. Of course, we are most interested in an antidote if someone contracts it somehow. :D

But for now, we are really, really interested in getting our trail needs in to the DNR regarding the NHAL master plan. I would be pretty sick if we let this opportunity slip away because if we don't get properly represented in the master plan now, we will be excluded for many years. The last revision was 2005. It is now 2017.
