    WOOOOHOOOHOOHOOO !!!!! :freaky :freaky

A Special Delivery envelope arrived in the post today.

It contained my returned Passport.....with a RUSSIAN VISA :clap

This is because I`ve applied and paid to go on the 2008 URAL PILGRIMAGE :deal

I`ll be flying from UK to Prague in Czecho and then from Prague to Erkatinburg in RUSSIA !!!

I`ll be met (with seven others) and then transported to IRBIT and the URAL FACTORY for a tour of the works and the very special URAL MUSEUM.

Then there`s a weekend bike rally..the IRBIT MOTORCYCLE FESTIVAL.

After that, collection of a Ural combo from the factory and a week of riding uncharted dirt tracks with a support vehicle containing tents and cooking gear....camping overnight in woodland ,or next to lakes or streams....making a return route to Erkaterinburg for a night and then flying home.

Five weeks to go...and counting :clap

Irbit is a nice little town (though in Australia it would make city status). The Bike Show is great!

A couple of tips - don't do what a Dutch consular official did last year and get drunk and slag off Russia and Russians. Not a good move. Most Russians are nationalists and bikers even more so. He was lucky to only get bashed-up!

Watch out for the samogon. Every second person will offer you some - it's more suitable to run the bike than to drink. It burns with a faint blue flame. The beer is very drinkable. If you want a nice vodka, I'd recommend Ruskiy Grafin.

Don't tell Sergei Ziranov (your guide) that you want a more adventurous ride - the Germans did that last year and Sergei took them seriously. He may be an "ex" Russian motocross champ, but he is very, very far from being past it.

Besides the motorcycle museum, Irbit has a nice little ethnographical museum in Ul. Kirova devoted to the town's history, plus a State Museum of Fine Arts located in Ul. Volodarskogo with an annexe in Ul. Yelizar'yevikh.

Learn the Cyrillic alphabet. There's only 33 letters and you'll be able to work quite a few things out just from knowing the alphabet.

If you want any Ural knicknacks - there's a small shop under the Prosecutor's Office (it was the old cell block) in Ul. Kirova. The auto shop at the back of the ground floor of Passazh also sometimes has some nice goodies.

    Have fun and enjoy.

Thanks for the info there, Ural Australia ... very useful.

I`m tri-lingual but I`m finding the Cyrillic unfathomable....
However,I`m teaching myself some basic and some possibly important sentences phonetically via a phrase book and audio CD.

    Time`s a ticking.......can`t wait :evil
