Great report. I have been to CR a couple times on surf trips, and we got lost leaving San Jose both times! So you're not the only one. This report makes me think it might be worth while to go there on a bike.

Lodging was easy, go to the local pub, have a cerveza.....someone will talk to ya, and ask. My spanish is extremely poor, I worked in Miami as a Site Engineer for 5 years fresh outta college so I know some Spanglish, bathroom, beer, azz $#@%, basic stuff.....Indian Sign language can usually get your point across most of the time.

I was prepared to camp if I had to.

Today I ordered that Rosetta Stone spanish program.....hope it works because I am going back.

Great report. My kind of low cost trip. Very nice.

I had a college roommate from Costa Rica. He was a great guy with lots of stories about his home. He said those monkeys were particularly nasty things and would throw all kinds of shit at you, including shit. He also spoke of seeing the sky literally green with parrots. I never made the tripÂ… maybe some day.

I was in Costa Rica the week after Thankgiving riding with Moto Tours Costa Rica. They rent KTM 450's and 640 enduros and were saying the monkeys don't like the sound of the 450's. They said earlier in the year while a rider was idling the bike watching the monkeys, one jumped down from the trees and onto to his bike trying to get into his helmet. The guy freaked out (understandability) hit the throttle and looped the bike over scaring the monkey off but mess up his back.

Costa Rica is truly a beautiful place to ride.

I have been to Costa Rica 4 times.... and the only places I have felt unsafe were in San Jose and Limon.... other than that the country is probably one of the safest in Central America. Tourism is one of Costa Rica's largest money supplies and the people are already super friendly.

I'll tell you guys if I find another safe place after next June when I get back from riding to and from Panama.:deal

Wow! Great Report! Makes me want to head back there. Warm and sunny in C.R. when it's winter up here. What a diverse place for the size of West Virginia. . . surf beaches, lagoons, whitewater rafting, active volcanoes, drinkable tap water, delicious fresh food, twisty pavement, rainforests, dirt roads, water crossings, abundant wildlife, not too pricey, excellent weather.
For those not wanting quite as much adventure for a first trip down there, my partner and I back in 2003 got a nice self-guided twisty pavement trip hooked up thru Wilhelm of Costaricantrails. See http://www.costaricantrails.com/adventur/moto/moto00.html

    wilhelm@costaricantrails.com

I believe Wilhelm will also customize tours based on what you would like to see.

I talked with a group of people taking a tour by CRT and they all seemed to be having a great time and commented on their guide/host.

Wild-Rider folks have been helpful to me figuring out my trip through Central America. Recommending places to buy tires and do maintenance. If you are interested in the info for my upcoming trip click here.

Nice post! Good to see guys heading out and exploring on their own.
Some of my best rides have been solo and exploring a new place with no itinerary.
    Love the mud shot.

Nice pics and report.Reading youre report just makes me want to go back to Costa Rica.In January 2005 Three friends and myself made almost the same trip. We rented the bikes from Wildrider ,Thorston is a great guy to deal with. We started our trip across the ferry to Montezuma,Margarita beach,Samara,Coco beach,Liberia,Monteverte Jungle where two of us were blown off the road into the ditch at 70kmh, no one got hurt thank god. Then to Arenal Volcano.Paos volcano and to Jaco and finallly back to San Jose. Eigth days of riding and some of the best scenery, food and good times. Thanks for the pics and the memories youre post are bringing back to me.

I've only seen howler monkeys in Belize. I even got the howl
down pretty well. They do like to throw shite but I called it
    Monkey Mustard from above.
    Great write up.

Very nice trip report. I lived in Costa Rica from 88-90 and ended up marrying a girl from there. We go back to visit her family about every two years. My in-laws live on a farm up in the mountains near Ciudad Quesada. I've been riding a sportster for the last four years and am just now getting into dual purpose bikes (bout ready to by KLR650).

Been to just about all the places you went to but seeing your trip photos gave me ideas for my next time down there, which will be for about 6 weeks in Feb / Mar of 09, if not sooner. Thanks for taking the time for the write up. Now I've got something to do while she visits her family?!?

Mr. Mullet, super extra special report. Your adventure attitude was obvious. Nicely done.

This is why I hang around ADV Rider.

I did a trip to CR last year. We rented a 950 and rode 2 up for 10 days. We went with no real plan as well but every day was a great adventure.
Very nice ride report, makes me want to go back already
