Just got the quote back for the revised Rotopax racks.

Here is the updated design. It will be all 0.1875" T5051 or 5052 aluminum. It will also use the new Rotopax mount and NOT the Kolpin mount. The Rotopax mount is a lot nicer, billet aluminum, and the tank fits snugly on it. The Kolpin required a several wraps of duct tape to keep the tank from vibrating on it.

The original version got tested a week ago on a day long ride with a full adventuring load:

That's about 60# of extra weight. Everything worked well and there wasn't much difference in handling.

The plan is to offer the racks at cost for any one that needs to carry extra gas and can't wait for, or doesn't want to pay for the Aqualine. It will take about 3 weeks for them to get made. I'll need to collect money in advance prior to ordering.

Here's what it's going to cost:

    Number......Price (ea.)
    3.............$105
    5.............$88
    7.............$82
    10............$77

Stainless hardware I'll provide and will be about $10 for each rack.

Shipping will be USPS Priority and will be about $10.

Buyer needs to order a Rotopax tank and mount. For a 2 gallon tank, mount and shipping, with the advrider 20% discount it will be $76.

Sooooo..... for less than $200 you can have extra fuel (250 miles worth) in a fairly usable system. We're doing a 5 day ride next week to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, so I'll have a better report of functionality an durability when we get back.

PM me if you're interested or post any questions.

Initial "at cost" offer is done.

Second order of ten racks is ready to ship. Currently there is only one that is not spoken for. Price is $145 with approximately $15-25 in shipping (USPS Priority, insured).

All have sold. No more planned.

Very nice. Is your mount bracket tied in with the dirtbagz bracket?

No. It replaces the left side Dirtbagz bracket. Dirtbagz left pannier gets strapped to the Rotopax and mount.

I have been interested in this since I first saw you post about it. Is it possible for you to include some kind of rack for the other side? I don't have any racks yet and hate to buy the dirt bags racks when I will just need the right side rack. Thanks.

PS: I'm in for one regardless of whether or not you have an idea about what to do for the other side so we are now up to 6 units.

Sorry guys. Haven't been keeping up here like I should.

Ordering for units "at cost" is done. I will add a couple of extras for any late comers, but the price will be a little higher to cover some of the work involved. I'll PM the guys who I've got on the list with price and payment info. Fabricator said it'd be about 3 weeks. I'm leaving this afternoon on a week long trip, so I'll be out of touch for the most part until next Tuesday, 6/2/09.

    Jaynen, got it.

CaptTurbo, no, it's a lot of work figuring out the bends and trying to work something for the Dirtbagz. I agree, it would be nice to eliminate the Dirtbagz racks altogether, but for now it's too much. You're on the list.

Capt Turbo you would need to buy the dirtbagz themselves still.

You could try to order just a bag set, try emailing them and saying you need to order just a right side bracket. If they ask why you could always say you dropped your bike and it got all bent or something

Good idea! In any case, I'm in and funds have been sent. I guess I need to be looking into buying the RotoPax container and mount now.

BTW, just finished 1000 miles in four days on two WRs with the test version of the rack (it's a little thinner stock and slightly different shaped.) No signs of fatigue and everything worked great. Bikes rode normally and had no problem running 60mph on good dirt roads.

I see that. Don't see an option for the combo of the fuel pack and the mount for it though. I'm sure I can order the mount seperately but I'm not sure which of them is the one I need.

Well, if I were buying one right now, I'd get this locking mount:

    http://www.rotopax.com/mount-lox-rotopax-fuel-pack-atv-fuel-gas-container-gas-can-fuel-pr-100.html

You can get a non-locking mount as well:

    http://www.rotopax.com/pack-mount-rotopax-fuel-pack-atv-fuel-gas-container-gas-can-fuel-c-3-p-1-pr-70.html

Then, you add that to your WR with EB's rack...

That's a great idea. I had not seen the locking option. Do you know if this one can use the spacer to make it a double stack? If so, I can see a use for it on my R1150GS. I might go with the red tank since if I swap between bikes, the blue would look a bit silly on the yellow GS. But then again, they sell the yellow tanks too. Dang, this could get expensive. :lol3

I like the locking one. Might do that. Wonder if I want to go "water" for the blue or green/red gas

The Green is a bit military which is cool. Less likely to stand out like the red

When are the racks slated to be produced I have been waiting on ordering the Rotopax until we know

I think all Rotopax units use the same mounts? Thats part of the appeal

Just to clarify with Emerson the locking mount listed in this thread + one of the 2 gallon cans is all we need or do we need any of those mounting plated listed

So, have you got any of the tank mounts left? if so put me on the list please.
    Thanks,

I think the kerosene blue is darker and looks better.

I'm going down today (6/8/09) to do a "first article inspection" before they form all of them. Maybe ship by the end of the week? :dunno Order your parts from Rotopax now.

You will need a fuel tank of your choice. Two gallon if you're planning on using it with Dirtbagz. (I have no idea how the rack works with the new one gallon tank.) And one mount (locking or regular), none of the extra stuff is needed. That backing plate that comes with the mount won't be used.

I don't know if the locking mount will protrude beyond the tank and rub the back of the Dirtbagz. The regular is probably the best choice.

There will be some available here when I get them back from the fabricators. I'll PM you when they're available.

The Dirtbagz bottom cinch strap will be used, the forward clip will be used and all you'll need is some 1" webbing and some buckles to loop around the tank to replace where the Dirtbagz pouch grabs the rack.

Let me know if you want me to do the webbing and buckles. I figure it's easy for me to get them here in town and include them. Rather than have 20 people looking for them in 20 different towns all over.
