    Hey guys,

I have a 2012 990 Adventure R that I bought in June. The last two times I took it in the dirt I've come back with sore wrists, much worse in my right throttle wrist. Each outing was about 6 hours of riding in trail/fire road terrain.

I'm wondering if anyone has had the same issue and what they did to cure it. I still have the stock riser and handlebar setup. Also, I'm 6'3". I'm assuming taller risers and bars would help, but wanted some input on setups that the taller riders on here are running.

    Thank you!

I'd do carpal tunnel exercises every day, they'll help keep your wrists stretched and loose.

I'm not tall but suffered the same problem.
The sweep on the standard bars is quite severe and this was causing my wrists to be angled in to my body causing severe ache after a few hours.
I fitted the RC Highbend bars that are slightly wider a fair bit taller and more importantly have a lot less sweep.

    No more wrist ache!

They'll also give you a bit more room if you're tall.

    Cheers

Loosening the clamp and rotating the handle bar forward some bit could be a starting point.

But rotated enough to be confortable when standing, seating becomes unconfortable so I too have installed an RC High Renthal Fat Bar which is pretty good.

What he said! Installing them (Renthal 609) was one of the best bang-for-the-buck mods I've done.

The stock bars have to much sweep (pull back). The bigger (shoulder width) you are the worse it is. I prefer the Renthal 608 bend, and add risers to adjust for your height.

Control lever angles affect things greatly. Try to run your levers so the back of your hand is in line with your forearms. SO much easier to operate the levers as well! I've done this easy fix for hundreds of customers over the years who reap the benefits with no cost for new bars/risers

If you do go for risers consider some that are adjustable like Rox where you can pivot the bars & the risers to come up with the fit that works for you.

Practice not holding on to the bars so tightly- wrists/forearms load up with blood (fresh & used) when you grip the bars and this causes tissues to swell & push on tendons, ligaments & nerves causing problems.

Yep, I agree with geometrician. I had lots of wrist pain when I reentered the world of motorcycles after a 20 year layoff. Started again to desert race with my son and now adventure travel. My fix...<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
    · Ride with an easy grip on the bars with elbows up and out<o:p></o:p>
    · Use the "cramp buster" thing on all my bikes dirt or road<o:p></o:p>
    · Adjust my levers as to be easy on the wrists<o:p></o:p>
    · Raised all my bars so I can ride standing whenever I get the chance<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
I don't think about my grip now. I have trained myself to be grip easy. I sometimes notice that on a bumpy section I let the grips move around in my hands, like letting a marble rattle around in side your hand.

    Good luck KJ

Me and my Dad both had this issue with our 950s. For both of us, it was the handlebar. When we put a new handlebar on each bike, the problem went away on each bike.

I have the same problem. What bar did you use?

That Renthal 608 seems difficult to find.

^^ Exactly this. I came back to riding after about 20 years too. My wrists were cramping up terribly until I realised I was holding on way too tight (mainly out of sheer terror:eek1). I also found this to contribute hugely to the sensation of the throttle being snatchy. As I became more confident and therefore more relaxed I lowered my elbows and things improved. Addition of 1 3/4" rox pros and a cramp buster and I now have 7000 fun filled, cramp free miles behind me...:clap

Must say I have Flex bars on my 450, so bars do matter.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Correct Handle bars, I believe, are bars that minimize the bent angle on your wrists. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Having a loose grip compensates for any &#8220;off&#8221; angle of wrist/bars/grip. Hard grip with bent wrist is the pain culprit IMO. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Still it is riding technique that helps keep the wrist angle to a minimum no matter what the bar&#8217;s angle. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Just saying that riding technique will help just as the correct angle bars will help.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
    Delusional maybe, maybe not!

I put a Renthal 608 on mine. I liked it a lot. I am running a Renthal 745 now just to play with it - just because. I might put the 608 back on for next year.

My dad uses the ProTaper Pastrana FMX bar and really likes it.

Everybody is different. You have to find the bar that works for your size/shape/body/style.

I was having wrist issues on my 2010 990R and recently switches to a 12 deg flexx bar. The bend is much less than the stock.
If you outstretch your wrists just ABOVE the bar and make a fist as if you would be gripping it, look at what your natural wrist postion is and then grab the bar and see how it's different.

They also make a 10 deg which is even less bend that I would get if you do a lot of stand up riding. The 12 or even the 14 would be perfect for general usage.

I hate the bend on the stock bars. The 690 bar bend stock is ok.

my 990 has pastrana atv race bend, which has less sweep and a little more lift.

I have the RC High Bend bars on my Suzuki RMZ450 motocross bike and love them. I have more room in the cockpit and the bars are wider. The stock 990 bars feel really narrow for me.

For those that put higher bars on their bikes, did the cables have enough slack?

I think I am up 1.5 inches and cables still fit well. I think guys that went 2 or more inches were having cable length problems.

Here is a pic of my 12deg flexx bars on top of the stock ones. Not quite aligned but you get an idea that it is a big difference.

If your cables run a bit tight, just flip the throttle twist grip through 180 deg so the cables exit underneath the bars.

Don't forget to block off the drain hole that will now be on the top...I just used grease and have had no issues in 20K miles.

    Cheers
