Riding to Inuvik via D2D rally in June and would like to know if XM weather radar via 376c will be available that far north? The subscription for the Mariner service lists high definition radar as one feature.

    Thx to all.

It's hard to say. I just fired mine up and the Sat. mosaic seems to stop at the NWT border. I say "seems" because the cut off is a hard line that follows the border. It's hard to say on the radar because there may be no precipitation that far North right now. :dunno

But that didn't answer your question. XM reception falls off the further North you travel. Friends of mine that have done the Alaska trip report having to be very exact with antenna placement and even then there were many times reception was lost for long periods.

The XM satellites are sitting over the equator at 85 degrees West Longitude and 115 degrees West Longitude. If you're in Canada, point the antenna south.

Aside from reception of the XM satellite signal, there has to be a weather radar on the ground to provide data for the service. I would think radar coverage is limited in remote areas.

US NEXRAD locations can be found here.

Canadian locations are here but whether Sirius-XM has access and transmits them through their system is another question.

On the website, XM marine weather package advertises as Canadian hi resolution radar and Nexrad in the US. Not being a truly marine user, I wondered what the coverage was in real terms. I doubt that there is very little land mass in the 1st world that is not covered by weather radar.

Keep those cards and letters commin', 3 weeks till departure!:D
