XR250L owners check in

    Ok, I haven't seen one yet, so I thought I would start one. I picked up a 91 in good condition back this past summer, and have been pleasantly surprised by the bike. It ain't the fastest, or the lightest, but it ain't bad on the trails. I have owned in the past, a KLR650, XR650L, and a DRZ400s. These are all great bikes. But all were just a tad bit heavy. The little L, suits my off road riding. And the bike is very easy to ride off road. The suspension is not the greatest, but is adequate for moderate speeds. All in all, it is a pretty good bike for 17 years old. Anyways, I would like to hear from some of the other owners of this great little bike.

    Found me one not long ago. 1991 xr250l with 2100 miles. Got everything off the frame except the triple tree shock and swing arm. Giving it a good cleaning and touching up the frame. New sprockets and chain waiting to go on. Cleaning all the plastic. Should look nice when I am through. Will keep you posted. Rebuilt the Carb . It had cranking issues when I purchased it. Previous Owner was using starter fluid to crank. Bike sat for five years under a sheet in garage. Go figure.

    I picked up my '92 XR250L about a month ago to use for a ride up the Continental Divide. I spent the better part of 2 weeks going through the entire bike, doing a tune-up and basic maintenence. The bike is in great shape and basically stock except for new tires and a 4 gallon aftermarket plastic tank.. As happens, the trip fell through and I thought about selling the bike as I have areally nice DR650 in my garage. Let me say that I have owned many of the more popular dual sports, and the more I ride the XR250L, the more I love the machine.

    My XRL has only 5,000 miles on it and has not been abused, so the engine and suspension are like new. The suspension is great. I actually like it better than that of the 2 DRZ400E's that I owned. The engine is very smooth and the wide ratio transmission pulls like crazy in the first 3 gears and the upper gears make the XR250L very good on the road.

    Hot or cold, my XR250L starts with 1-2 kicks and runs great. I have taken it on a number of adventure rides that include highway and some very difficult singletrack in the Colorado mountains. If you can find one of these in good condition, it is well worth a look.

    what years will the xr250r parts swap with the xr250l? More specifically the carb, breather box, header exhaust front forks and shock.

    I just got a '96 XR250L, 6K on the odo. :clap I've been lazily working on buying this bike for about 4 years.

    It's in nice shape, shod with Distanzas and has a small top case on the rear. The top case is getting moved over to my wife's bike and I've ordered a set Michelin AC10s and a Clarke tank for it.

    It's been a blast to ride around town and commute to work. I'm going to stick to pavement and gravel until the new tires come in.

    I have a 94 w/10k miles. It's been reliable as a rock doorstop.

    I've got a 93 with about 6000 miles. I'm refreshing the top end at the moment.

    Anyhow, it's a great bike that's definitely a keeper.

    Our poor XR250L has identity issues at the moment.
    We bought it for $600 dollars leaking and smoking!
    My son drove the piss out of it till he broke the rear suspension. We couldn't find one so we made one out of a XR650L. Next came a new piston, some new rings and lots of loving that it should have had years ago. About 5 days after the rebuild my son again was driving the piss out of it. This is really the poor bike that wont quit. The original cam broke; not in the center a ear broke off. Now sporting a brand new XR250R cam (WOW nice upgrade) Some where along the way it picked up a set of USD forks off a CRF250R a Vapor speedo, and XR250R Carburetor. The best upgrades to date. The XR250R Carb makes starting the bike a two kick affair in freezing temperatures. The Cam is superb; instant power, you can roll on the throttle and pull the front wheel of the ground. Future upgrades a XR250R plastic tank and I think she will be good to go. The bike is like riding a bicycle.

    Wow sounds nice McLeod. So the carb helped with the starting situation? Mine is a bear to start and I'm wondering if yours was as well? Anyway, I'm refreshing the top end to take compression out to the question.

    Yes the XR250R carb is a huge help. But Make sure your valves are properly adjusted and that will be a huge help also.

    Here's a pic of my '91 - years of on and off road riding, 10K miles total so far. Wishing Honda would come out with something similar with an e-start in the US (as they have in Australia...) the CRF230L just doesn't do it for me.

    I found what, at first glance, appears to be a ridiculously good deal on on XR250L on Craigslist. This would be my first off-road bike. After some reading I'm a bit wary of the kick start, but if I can really get it for the posted asking price, I don't care.

    Might have the chance to accuire a new toy. It's a 96 xr250l, with 1600 miles. Is there any thing besides the basics I should look for? I am not new to bikes, but have not be able to do much research on this model. It will be used as mostly a weekend bike, with fairly mild riding. Pro's & cons ? Thanks in advance

    The L is very similar to the 250R of the same age.
    The differnces are pretty much no oil cooler on the L, A cush hub, and more weight. The stock carb sucks. You will have to learn how to start it.

    If you do buy it find a good used 250R carb and your starting issues will go away!

    We bought a Roached out 250L my son learned how to ride on it (crash) then we rebuilt it. After a 250R cam, Carb and CRF front forks. Its a awesome bike. If you strip all the crap off of it you can get its weight down pretty light. It always feels like a bicycle when I ride it compared to my XR650L.

    As with all the XR based bikes they are pretty much bullet proof.
    Valve adjustments and oil changes are your friends.

    The only issues we found with ours is that by the time I rebuilt it we had to put in a new piston, and do the entire top end.

    Dunno if it is gonna happen,and have yet to see the bike,just looking for some tips to be on the look out for. I have a 65 Mustang that is pretty rough condition and he is thinking about trading. I just picked up a tw200 a couple weeks ago,and thought adding another bike would be cool. Tw for the wife and the honda for me.
