XR600 v DR650

    What's everyone's thoughts
    I have a XR600 '96 all set up
    Acerbis tank
    Oil Cooler
    Staintune pipe
    Screen
    Rack
    U get the drift
    It's a great bike good power , economy ,Suspension , plus I have heaps of spare parts from a doner bike

    My questions About the DR are
    Power and suspension are they comparable to my XR or maybe even better?
    The rest is a no brainer electric start , pannier systems,Cush drive, farkles galore :-)
    Let me know your thoughts

    From the outset, I am biased as I have a farkled DR and love it for all the 'no brainer' reasons you suggest but unless you need to be offloading some money, your XR is already set up.....plenty of no rack luggage options for you, most specifically the Giant Loop bags depending on what size you want......oh, and if you like kicking the bike over

    I have pannier racks that I built for my XR

    It's more power and suspension and 30l of fuel :-) that the DR may have over my bike

    I ride an XR650R, get shit from Gags all the time about having to kick...keeps me fit..... but he's right don't spend your cash unless your current machine is not doing it for you.

    Nothing wrong with kickstart bikes, if you want to go to the next level, why not the XR650R?
    I've seen them on here for around $3000 or less
    DR's for similar money too, depending on age/km's/owner's situation etc......

    If you still want to "upgrade" buy smart it will save you in "bling" costs as some people spend a lot setting up their machine, only to sell later at major discount compared to cost.
    If your current XR is worthy of restoration don't sell it for nothing......wait and see how much shmick examples will bring in the future...IT490's worth $10k now

    I can start my XR with my hand there not hard to start
    I ride my mates XR650 all the time there awsome bulk power suspensions good
    But same things that I need with my XR keep popping up things like no battery for charging 12v equipment
    Mine xr is In good nik but Im consistently looking for more power and better low speed handling whilst loaded up
    I find myself riding longer distances and the old XR is just falling short of my requirements ATM

    Why not add electric start to your XR like I did?

    Ah, funny you ask this question. I had a well set up 98 XR600 with all the fruit. I then decided to buy a DRZ 400 wanted something a bit more nimble with electric start etc, etc and sold my XR. A few weeks after I sold the XR I decided I needed a bike for longer adventure type riding and bought a new DR 650. To this day I kick myself for selling the XR, I should have kept it and changed the gearing, added racks, screen etc., and used that as the adventure type bike. As for the electric start debate the only time mine was hard to start was when it was hot and I dropped it. As an adventure bike it's not like you drop them that often and you are not having to start all the time like a bike you would ride on single track. The XR600 was far more serious off roader the DR650 IMHO.

    I look at it this way the XR can do anything the DR can, But i dont think the DR can match the XR in some areas
    so keep the XR and add a few mods

    There is no way on this earth I would even bother putting an electric start on the XR just a waste of $ IMHO
    There piss easy to start... lucky mine is hot or cold
    Might hav to rewind the stator and razzle up the stock lighting put some grip Warmers on and try get a 12v charging socket mounted

    I have a 91 XR600 with Acerbis tank , with the small tank it was better to ride through tight bush than my DRZ400 , A bike shop loaned me a DR650 2009 model and I found it cramped, it didnt go around corners on the road as well , I was 3 km from the shop wishing I had taken the CB1100 they had offered me. The XR is an enduro bike so it comes into its own off road without having to spend money on suspension. So I would keep yours

    Agreed, I reckon I could ride my XR600 quicker even in tight stuff than the DRZ. The XR steered better to.

    Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate, fix the bloody seat and you can forgive any of the other shortcomings on an XR. Mine is similar, tank, suspension, staintune, rack, pivot pegz, oil cooler, screen, etc etc. The horn circuit delivers 12v dc btw.:D

    My advice? Don't sell it, ever. You will regret it for the rest of your days.

    I had an 88 XR600R several years ago. Gave it up because of doctors orders...."trying to start that bike will kill you". Probably should have kept it since I'm about 40 lbs over weight now.

    I just bought an 07 DR650. I was truly hoping that I would get all the fun of the XR with the button, etc. Not even close. The DR is a great bike, but it lacks a ball compared to the XR.

    I say keep the XR!
    I sold my TTR600 early last year to get a DR650 for adv, and don't get me wrong the DR has been great, not a problem in 15000 km's since then.
    BUT, I just wish I had of set the TTR up as an adv'r instead first just to answer all the questions I had about it. I just thought an electric start bike would be so much easier in say deep sand, but in hindsight the TTR wouldn't have been a problem, it was such a nice bike.......I regret selling it now:(
