Yep, Mikes XS has been great. I was going to put pistons and rings in but with 31k I de carbonized everything and measured the bores and pistons and all was well, so I left it alone.

Q?:- How long are you getting out of your camchains?

At 31k the cam chain was fine, unfortunatly I got side lined for several months by a crash on road and the nice heavy coat of gasket remover spray that I applied the nite before said crash caused the chain to rust like a sumbitch, hence the new chain. I have an engine with over 50k on it and that cam chain is perfectly fine and I won't hesitat to reuse it.

Thanks for the heads-up, what about the camchain guides/runners ? :huh
Got a noise in mine [40K] but so far haven't found the culprit. :rofl

Here's my 1970 XS1 in its original candy apple green paint....I did and had a lot of work done to her including an engine rebuild, fork rebuild, brakes rebuilt, new tires, all new wiring and countless other part replacements thanks to MikesXS.com. It runs great, but it is blowing its fuse after an hour of riding or so...so I still got work to do.

Its so cool lookin' I decided to park it in my family room for the winter. :1drink

Have you tried re-soldering the connections between the wiring and fuse block? They can become embrittled with time, leading to high resistance and fuse overheating. This problem occurred on two of my old Hondas.

Thanks Mark...actually on the XS1 there isn't any fuse block. There's just one single fuse inline with the battery hot. I'm checking for shorts....but I'm wondering if I'll need to replace the rotor (used replacement), regulator and/or rectifier.

I have a '79 project XS650G Standard. It is a dream machine. I dream of all kinds of things to turn it into. The most long lasting dream is to turn it into an adventure tourer with a 21" front wheel, some new design dual sport tires and plastic fenders. I would also like to build a set of high scrambler pipes for it. :D

The 79 STD is the rarest 650 of them all. Last year of the STD and very, very limited production!
If it's a decent example of a 79 std, you should keep it that way and use parts from all the other old junkers out there for a scrambler

    This is my 2 cents.
    Others may disagree.

Let's see your photo of it....

When I had my beat up worn out XS1,I enjoyed it so much I used to say,if I won Lotto,I wouldn't bother buying a new bike,I'd just rebuild the XS1.

+1, gotta agree on that one, as much as I like re-creating an adventure bike,

if it's matching frame & engine numbers, definately keep it original!

Still might consider replacing the inline fuse holder. Good luck.

Maybe true for the US, here in Germany the STD was sold until '82

:yikes I didn't know that at all!
    Nice.
So we were deprived of a "bike".
I see most all the std's features that I'm used to. All I really see different is the tailight.
Did it come with the chrome instr buckets, dual disc's?
    metal side covers?

    Nice looking bike.
