Collector box on my '91 GS gone - rusted, pitted, kaput.
Looking at replacing with Y-Pipe from Keihan Exhaust. Heck of a lot cheaper than replacing with new collector box.
Need observations/opinions from you guys who have done it. Any issues re: re-jetting, loudness etc.
To save money and obviously weight would be way to go? Just concerned if any other issues before I send them my moola.
    Appreciate your views/experiences with this.

    BMW is VERY good.

Most changes from OEM exhaust configuration reduce power.

Not true - the Keihen sounds great( not too loud, just cammy) and helps with responsiveness and looks good too.

I run a Y on my GS and actually went back to the Colostomy bag to see if there was an improvement in bottom end to mid range. Thee is none and in fact I lost a shit load of power. I roade approx 1000kms 2 up with the std config. Before the next trip, I had installed the Y again.

Marked improvement in performance, fuel economy and it has a sound like a twin again.

OK, I'm sold. Thanks for the great feedback.
Order went in today after I talked to guys at Keihan. Lots of good info from them as well. Should have in a few weeks and go from there!

Bob - Bob's BMW sells the Keihan for a little bit less the Keihan and you don't have to worry about it getting lost in the mail and you will get it alot sooner. I will bet if you call them in the A.M. you would be able to cancel and get from Bob's BMW. Sorry I didn't relay this to you sooner.

    Darmahman, thanks for the info.
I checked Bob's BMW - they want $269.00 USD which = $363.00 CDN + postage+ customs duties + provincial tax = way too much moola.

If order direct from Keihan 114,56 L (UK)- VAT (ship out of UK) = $261.00 CDN + postage (35 CDN apprx)+ no duty+ friggin PST (as above) = much cheaper.

I spoke to them last night at Keihan and they have a return coming back from the US and would offer better deal on that if wanted to wait 2 weeks. I'm in no immediate rush as the collector box still on but perforated all across bottom but still rideable. So going to search e-bay again as well

    No problem.
Other option is to send part to my buddy in Buffalo, put it on and ride back home! Then, no tax, no duty....hmmmmmm

I'm sold too, my catalytic has some nasty holes in it, too, and i'd love to drop another couple-a two, three pounds, also. Going to get one myself.

so, how much louder IS the Y-pipe than the original 'colostomy bag' (good one Oz :lol3)? I don't want to lose my stealth capabilities completely, but it would be nice to get a little more sound out of the bike.

And can anyone clarify exactly what that thing actually does? Some call it a catalytic converter, but others call it a collector box. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's heavy...

Keihan's web site lists the current price at:

$114.07 pounds which should be 206 UDS$ what's the deal????

    If it's 115 EURO, that's only $$143 USD

    ????????

in the past when I've dealt with British vendors, shipping has sometimes been quite steep. Apparently for them to get any kind of insurance on the shipment they have to do something like overnight, which can run close to $100, and some refuse to ship uninsured. So check into Keihan's shipping policy...

I wonder if we collected multiple orders if we could save some $$?

Check with Stan Smith at Rocky Point Cycle. I think he still carries Keihan stuff. His prices should be much better than Bob's BMW.

same applies to USA vendors. when you're not in USA. and the USPS is not all that much less expensive than a courier company. although it is much slower.
