Its a great thread you got going here guys, im interested in the upgrades you speak of, RM400N-T rear swing arm, YZ465 front end, seems like that combo would make for a pretty serious offroader, but the added length of the forks would only add to the problems with rake on the front end!!

It's a decent motor one you've replaced the stock rod with a Titanium Carrillo custom made $$$), upgraded the piston to an Arias, upped the compression to 13:1, and added a reinforced base plate between the cylinder and the case. The mounting bolts are a little susceptible to fatigue and cracking. Since they don't go all the way through the case, this can lead to embarrassing moments on the track.

I guess the engineers put that red line there for a reason.

After we modified the engine, tho', nothing we did fazed it.

Great stuff, Bozola. The XT/TT engines were famous for grenading when piston speed exceeded 4,000 fpm. Glad to hear you discovered a way around it. Was there ever a retail source for the base plate or was that a one-off?

It was a one-off chunk of billet. I admit that was probably over kill as once you reduce the reciprocating mass and throw away the garbage stock rod the engine is pretty tough. All of the engines stopped detonating once we went with the Arias and Carrillos. The base plate stopped the case from fracturing. Good thing too...XT500 bottom-end are hard to find!

Fun bike to race once you've gotten rid of the stock exhaust, carbs, wheels, rod, piston, seat, fenders, lights, battery, and centerstand. ;)

Thought i'd try to keep this thread going with some pix of my "rehabilitated xt"...

My friend has a pic of the bike when i got it, i'll try to get it from him and upload it later. The xt was a basket case when i got it... replaced fork seals, gas tank, tires, handlebars, carb rebuild, new seat, new tt500 exhaust, chain, sprockets, case saver, rear fender, front fender, tail light, wiring issues, coil, and probably a few other things i can't recall!

There's still more to be done, though. On cold start up, she smokes like a chimney, but after she warms up, no more smoking. I'm guessing i need to replace the valve guides... Any input from anyone on what all i should replace if i do it? valve guides, valve seals, maybe timing chain while i'm in there? Still got to fab a rear rack, get some handguards, fab a small windscreen, replacement forks w/ aluminum front wheel and disc brake...i'm sure i'll think of more!
love this bike! torquey, simple, and fun...

what sort of rear fender is that? plastic?
does it shake like a vibrator? mines steel with rubber bushings, it shakes so violently cant keep taillights in 1 piece.

it's an acerbis "classic?" or something like that. they used to sell them out of chapparall motorsports, but i don't see them anymore. it was a universal model and took some trimming and drilling to get to fit...

This is a XT engine in a '78 Maico GS frame. Rides like crap due to very bad suspension; lot of work to do.

I'm new here. My other rides are a BMW R100GS [IMG]

and a KTM 450 EXC (the KTM is for sale, now that a bought this beauty) I rode the Alto Turia Ride in Spain on both of them.

I am a member of the Dutch XT&SR500 Club, and we did a little tour round Utrecht last sunday. About half of the group were on different brands and models (a few BMW's, 2 enormous Triumph Cruisers), some trailered their XT and some had a different kind of Yamaha, like my little TT350 but who cares.

    These XT's were participating
