It seems your expectation is sound, perhaps due to the rider, or is it due to the Forward engine being essentially the current Tech 3 mill hobbled by Dorna ECU, versus the RCV satellite mill (less pneumatic valvetrain) also hobbled by Dorna ECU?.... meaning the Yamaha "open" bike may be a better base engine ? I noticed you didn't mention Colin specifically.

Is Dorna continuing to develop the spec ECU software, or is it fixed for the season as of now (or at some point in the future)?

It seems that over race distance, the open bikes should (theoretically) have an effective power advantage, as they can run a higher-power, lower-efficiency mapping for more of the race versus the factory/satellite bikes. Even though the factory teams can presumably out-tune the open teams, a 20% difference in fuel allocation means that the open bikes can be 10% less efficient and still more powerful (I think)....and the times posted show only a 2% difference in single-lap times, from Marquez to Hayden.

I'm hoping that we'll see less of an obvious pecking order based on machinery and more varied results from week to week next year, but maybe I'm just an optimist.

    I hope Smith progresses.

It got a bit frustrating with him in Moto2, he seemed unable or unwilling to aggressively re-pass when he got mugged. Always seemed to settle for 5th or 6th place.

He's been top 10 on the Tech-3 bike, but - as a fan - I'd like to see some fight out of him.

I think there's still a fair bit to come from Brad. He was saddled with an uncompetitive bike in Moto 2 (check the results of others on the Mistral 610, it's a dog) but still managed to drag it to a few decent finishes. You have to look back to 125s to see his true potential. Hopefully he can show what he's got next season.

Spec ECU is receiving development, but progress is slow, and is intentionally limited. The idea is to turn it into something competent which makes the show more entertaining, but is safe and fast. It will never match the level of sophistication of the factory software, though

    Good question....:D

A dumb time of year to be doing it, it could be 40 in the shade, not really a good guide to how they'll perform in October....But whatever, my roster has me off then, so it should be good.

Do you know if the "production" Honda and Yamaha teams get all their engines from the factorys at the beginning of the season?

Let's say Aleix is constantly the second fastest Yamaha next season, or Nicky starts battling too much with the Repsol guys. ( If Stoner really got the production racer 0,3s off the prototype, this could happen... )

With the spec ECUs, the only way for the factorys to "control" the production teams are the engines... If the factorys release the engines as the season goes, they could mess with them. I could surely see Honda doing it.

I read recently (motomatters?) that while the bikes are theirs to keep after 2 years they don't get to open the engines until then.
