YES. In my experience, it is very common. Half the riders I see don't even wear helmets (here in Minnesota). I'm always amazed to see the bikers riding in the cold rain with sunglasses and no helmet. You'd think that for no other reason than comfort they have a helmet on then.

The "ATGATT" mentality is at the extreme end of the riding gear spectrum, with flip-flops and no helmet at the other extreme. Most people fall somewhere in between. Reading these boards you'd thing only risk-taking lunatics rode without head-to-toe padding. IMHO your "naughty" list is more than what 99% of what other riders wear. Are they all crazy? I think not.

FWIW, I have Kilimanjaro jacket and pants, and wear them when going for a ride, meaning at least an hour of pleasure riding. If it's warm and I'm making a quick 4 mile run to Home Depot for nuts and bolts, I wear a helmet, jeans, jean jacket and gloves. Donning all the Apollo 13 gear for a quick run can take the fun out of the quick errand.

I still gotta get a proper road helmet - was looking at the Arai XD, a nice wp suit - the BMW Rallye 2 looks nice and expensive and some proper boots - Prexport or Gaerne.

Wear what you would wear if you knew you were gonna crash. Plan for the event.
For instance, I would never waste $$ on knee protection unless of course I would be needing my knees in the future!

Great topic! I don't want to crash in my current gloves so I guess it's time for an upgrade. Thanks for rattling my cage.

Mine looks kinda like this but it is the Motard silver one.

I wear this every day under my jacket or over a t-shirt if I'm just running to the store. The sternum protection kicks ass and it takes about 3 seconds to get on and off.

I dont know that there is anything more visible than this jacket. The titaniunm reflects, the white is super bright, and the black elbows and back give great contrast.

These are ok for the summertime.

These kick ass, they slip right over my work slacks and are nice and cool in 95 degree weather because of the ventilated crotch.

Cheap as hell, but offer better protection than most street boots. Very comfortable, and dont look too wierd when worn under the baggy jeans.

Yeah those are Icon Recon jeans..... I got mine on Ebay for about 50 bucks. They run a few sizes too small. I usually wear a size 34, and I needed a size 36....

I don't have alot of space for different gear, so have aspired to own a single outfit that works for all conditions. Right now it's:
    Schuberth Concept 1 helmet
    custom molded earplugs
    (optional) Aerostich wind triangle
Motoport Ultra II stretch Kevlar jacket and pants with built-in armor
    Oxstar Matrix boots
Gloves (one of several pair depending on conditions)

I never get on the bike without all this stuff on, so when purchasing I look for easy-on and off. For cold weather I have Goretex liners, top and bottom, a zip-in thermal layer; for real cold I have an electrified primaloft jacket and I put optional plexi knee fairings on my bike. Have not tried the Motoport in extreme cold yet, but so far in conditions from 40-90F it's been quite comfortable.
