Thinking about shopping for a used BMW Z4. I'm not looking for high performance. I'm looking for reliability, "relative" comfort and so on. What I need to learn is what to look for, and what to avoid. Opinions as well as facts are welcome. Thanks !

Anything made in Germany should crossed off your list.

Funny how the first three replies went. I really sort of agree. I've had some German cars and with the exception of one ( 1971 BMW 2002), they were all disappointments. I have a real distrust of German electrical stuff. I guess I should just forget this passing fancy.

It would be a fun car, I have always wanted a Z3 coupe. Overly complicated electronics and poor quality plastic parts (like water pump impellers) have kept me away.

So if you leave the "reliability" part out of your buying criteria, you will be happy.

Made in Spartanburg till '08. Quality is iffy though better than on the old Z3.
Fast wear on interior, mostly painted stuff goes quick, as it did in 1st gen X5 and X3. Headlights go blind reeel fast. Coils, rear springs and valve train on 6's are common issues.
    3.0si is the one.

I have an 07 Z4 it has been a great car with no problems. It still has the original battery in it!

If you can find a used certified one at a BMW dealer that is the way to go.

The dealer I use is Brahman in Jupiter Fl. Great service and treatment there regardless of where you bought your car, new or used.

I would definitely buy another one.

They look nice. This current generation's exterior and interior was designed by two women and it's probably their best looking model. I would think the 2.0L Turbo with a 6 speed would be a fun lil' drive.

Funny because I was going to add Anything made in Germany after 1990 should be crossed off the list. You can not break my 1985 Dinan E28....

My girlfriend bought one this past spring, I think she paid $13K it's an '04 had about 80K on it. The thing looked new when we picked it up down in Pueblo. It did develop a coolant leak the first week and needed an A/C recharge but since then it's been fine. Her's is a SMG and I'm not a huge fan. It just doesn't shift fast enough for my liking I feel I could shift a normal manual faster. I had an NA Miata several years ago and I had much more fun driving that car than the Z-4 (again I think I'd probably feel differently if the Z-4 had a clutch).

It is MUCH faster than a Miata but probably slower than an S2000 (I believe the S2K is lighter but not 100% sure), the S2K has similar HP but significantly less torque than the 3.0 I-6 in the BMW (a 2.5 is also available but if you get a Z4 go for the 3.0). I was trying to steer her away from the German cars but she didn't like the MX-5 (claimed the windshield header was too low) and I don't think she even tested an S2K (probably 'cause she'd been driving an Accord Coupe for the last 7 years). If it were me I'd probably go for the S2K, but I like rev happy motors.

The funny thing is she moved here from New Orleans, said she would never have the top down back there due to all the rain and it's too friggin hot in the summer.

I live 45 miles from New Orleans. Top down is not good in the summer except some evenings. Best weather is September-December, then April-June. This year has been pretty rainy.
