Apart from the fantastic hardcore ride, this is the best ride report I have read to date. Right amount of pics and excellent writing!

The whole tale reminds me of The Lord of The Rings when Frodo and Samwise are down to a few crumbs of lembas elf bread and battle on in fatigue, despair, and friendship.

A ride well ridden and a story well told. :thumb

Thanks for taking us along, MJ. I finished reading two days ago and I still feel like I'm there.

    Where to next...?

Were you nervous riding with Lions in the area? I've ridden with lots of bears in the area but they eat mostly berries and insects.

Yes, after running into them, we were a bit shaken. Especially as the visibility was nowhere because of it being so overgrown.

You showed a picture of what looked like a fly with a large stinger or something coming out the front of it. Was that a tsetse fly? Are they venomous?

I've had days a bit like your 'bad' day when I kept dropping the bike and had no idea how long the impossible to ride stretch went on. At one point I said to myself that if I go down once more, I'm just going to stay down & fall asleep in my kit. Yet my day when that hit me wasn't nearly as bad as yours. I may have often fallen, but there were no scary insects or animals around & I was on rutted dry roads with rocks - not mud.

Beats me how you guys managed to keep on keeping on.

No, that is not a tsetse fly, it was something that stayed in the shade and near moisture. It hurts pretty bad when that thing penetrates.

I like others (who've probably never been to Africa) am amazed that you freely went into the rivers and even drank river water straight. The legend of Africa told to me is that doing either was either immediately fatal or a slow death from some sort of parasite.

As to the tsetse fly, where I'm from we used to have swarms of mosquitoes which were so dense that you couldn't see a person even a few meters away if in such a swarm (near most rivers). The white colonizers responded by an eradication program which sprays several times a year bringing the numbers down to something reasonable.

I'm supposing that the back country where you were is too remote or poor or both to have such a program against this fly.

There was a program back in the Rhodesia time where they sprayed the tsetse fly. We had to drive the cars into a shed on the side of the road going to Kariba where the car was sprayed with insecticide. I'm sure the current Zim govt has let that slide into oblivion as well.
Fantastic read MJ, thanks for the good dose of homesickness :)

Did it work? I keep hearing about how this insect causes immense economic damages. Here it clearly caused a lot of discomfort and maybe could have caused worse.

Who know's, I am no expert there. It probably helped somewhat, but I suspect it was probably a bit like farting into the wind. There's a lot of flies and a lot of area that they inhabit.

I am sure there are 6 sluice gates in Kariba, not 9, but it's not often that even one gate is open let alone ALL of them. Very lucky to experience a sight like that. The shot of the wall you can see the mist from the water flowing thru the gates. Thanks for putting up the pics.
