It’s been a tough year for rally organizers around the globe, and it appears 2021 might not start as everyone had hoped for. The organization of Africa Eco Race 2021 tried to adjust the route drastically changing it from Monaco – Dakar to Dakar – Dakar with just Mauritania and Senegal on the menu, as Morocco was still closed in early fall and it was impossible to recce the routes there. However, the OGA announced today that the entire race is cancelled due to COVID-19, and competitors should instead plan for 2022.

“Our rally has always been about passion, a race organized by people passionate about Africa and cross-country rallies which bring together adventurers, travelers, and motorsports lovers, all in respect of the economical and environmental aspects of the countries and populations we cross.

Despite the year 2020 being hit by this pandemic, all was put in place by the organization team of the Africa Eco Race 2021 to succeed in organizing this 13th edition. The main objective was to adapt the COVID-19 restrictions: a new route Dakar-Dakar, new logistics, new dates, a set up of a specific sanitary protocol, and taking into account the various restrictions competitors from different countries had to deal with.

The competitors, volunteers, providers, and partners of this edition were ready and set. Today, it is 63 motorbikes, 42 cars and SSVs, and 13 trucks gave us their trust and were part of the 600-people caravan from over 30 nationalities.

After all my team’s efforts, I had to take a very painful decision to cancel the Africa Eco Race 2021.

Despite all of the organizational work and our aim for this edition to go well, the external factors which are out of our control have forced us to cancel now out of respect to all the competitors, volunteers, and partners; we refuse to take any risk related to COVID-19 and its consequences”, Jean-Louis Schlesser, director of the race, said in a press release.

The organizers are offering full refunds to competitors, and those who want to keep their entries for 2022 may opt to do so.
