BMW Motorrad is on a roll. 2019 marks the 9th consecutive year that the German brand has increased its total sales. The latest year saw BMW deliver a total of 175,162 powered two-wheelers compared to 165,566 in 2018. Given the pressures on the world motorcycle market, an increase of 5.8% and is quite remarkable.
Dr. Markus Schramm, BMW Motorrad’s CEO said:
“2019 was another very successful year for BMW Motorrad in spite of a number of challenges. We achieved a sales record for the ninth time in succession. I would like to thank our customers all over the world most sincerely for the great trust they have placed in us again in 2019.”
Schramm went on to say that the brand’s 2019 sales figures showed that BMW’s motorcycle growth strategy is working. According to the BMW head honcho, seven new models along with its existing product portfolio is key to increasing sales.
Going further, Schramm said that BMW is its product range with emotional and innovative new products in 2020. The BMW R 18 is one of those products and is BMW’s newest design for a cruiser.
BMW also saw some racing success int 2019. BMW got its first podium finishes in the FIM World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) and made an entry into the Endurance World Championship (FIM EWC). Schramm said that these milestones confirm its confidence in the new BMW S 1000 RR.
The European market is BMW Motorrad’s best market. Germany leads the sales charge with an increase of 10.4% The remainder of Europe grew 7%. In the USA and Canada, BMW’s market share remained stable with sales of 15,116 bikes. Finally, sales increased in both China and Brazil. China recorded 16.6% sales growth while Brazil grew by 36.7%.
The outlook for 2020 is also rosy according to BMW Motorrad’s Head of Sales and Marketing, Timo Resch.
“We already presented three of our brand new models for the coming season at EICMA 2019. In the mid-range segment, we are launching two highly attractive new bikes, the BMW F 900 R and the F 900 XR. And the new edition of the popular BMW S 1000 XR is also eagerly awaited by our customers. We are of course particularly looking forward to our entry into the high-volume cruiser segment in the second half of 2020. The market launch of the BMW R 18 will certainly be one of the highlights in 2020”
So it has been a good year for BMW Motorrad. Let’s hope that other brands can see similar success and return the motorcycle industry to its glory years.
