Chile, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
There are many other countries that could offer incredible beauty and even unbelievable motorcycling opportunities.
But if you think about it, Chile with its unique shape and positioning in this world can offer more than most.
Its length down along the South American continent means it has an incredibly diverse climate. The north is very dry and its high deserts are some of the most beautiful in the world. In the south you have the picturesque Patagonia, with its glaciers and crystal clear lakes. All along its east side there is one of the tallest mountain range in the world, la cordillera de los Andes, which peaks at 7000m high with the Aconcagua mountain, right at Santiago doorsteps. All along the Cordillera the land is lined with volcanoes and it is still one of the most seismic area on the planet. The coast offers some spectacular beaches and it’s definitely one of the seafood wonders of South America.
Chile offers an almost unequaled variety of solutions in terms of adventure riding or easy touring. Its people’s friendliness and the country’s western-style culture allows the motorcycle community to flourish freely from a ride up to the el Tatio geyser in the fantastic San Pedro de Atacama, to the peaks of Torres del Paine; from the volcanoes of Pucon to the enchanted island of Chiloe.
Even if you are in Santiago, you can easily ride from the ridge of the Andes at los Farallones, to the beautiful beaches of Valparaiso, in few hours. From sipping Pisco Sours in Val Elqui, near the Cordillera, to the shores of La Serena takes less than 2 hours.
From valle de Maipo, the fantastic wine region in the vicinity of Santiago, to the wineries of Mendoza, Argentina, across the beautiful paso Libertadores takes less then 4 hours. There are so many options to choose from and Chile is also home to one of the more renowned and spectacular roads in the world: la carretera Austral.
Otherwise known as Ruta 7, this stretch of paved and unpaved road in the very south of Chile, is a motorcycle adventure/hiking paradise. Its 1500km from Puerto Montt to Villa O’Highins offers simply some of the best scenery I’ve seen in my life.
A road that runs between the southern fjords and the tall mountains on the Andes – like the local say, “Chi chi chi, Le Le Le, Viva Chile!”
