Are you sitting around, moping in your flat, because the Dakar Rally runs in Saudi Arabia these days, instead of the classic Europe-to-Africa route?
Mope no more! The crew at Bespoke Rallies has just what you want. Starting in 2022, the group is running the Dakar Enduro Rally, an overland jaunt that will travel from the UK all the way to Senegal.
This event is not aimed at pro-level riders. Here’s the website’s description of what to expect:
this 6,500km journey is open to a range of vehicles from classics to production hatchbacks. We even have a class for motorcycles – just like the original. You don’t have to be a seasoned rally driver to take part – this is for everyone with a sense of adventure.
The route will stick to quiet secondary roads through Europe, until it gets to Africa. Then, organizers say
we will be running in the wheel tracks of the original event wherever possible, using some of the finest roads of the classic route while avoiding the dune bashing of the more extreme sections.
Sounds like it should be fairly achievable for a competent amateur, then. This event is open to cars, just like the classic Dakar events, but the website makes sure to point out that there are motorcycle classes (under 600 cc, or over 600 cc).
According to the rally’s write-up on the website, your entry fee includes accommodations, food, ferry and border arrangements and some level of mechanical support.
The rally’s inaugural run in 2022 starts on February 28, with participants scheduled to leave Dakar on March 20, meaning a three-week event in total (not counting your return journey). The event looks like lots of fun, although we’re sure it’s expensive to participate.
