Inmates... Planning some vacaciones here! I am based in Sao Paulo and finnaly got a hold of some time out for a 7-10 days trip and the idea is to put some SERIOUS miles on the clock of my GS... Ideas of what to do (consider I am solo, however more than happy to get company!) most welcome! Where to head and what objective? South to Chui? West to Bonito? Little north to explore Minas? Where can I find the best sights and twisties? Some off road would be nice too (but pls keep it light I am not that used to leave the tarmac!)... Best, GSAdventurer
Hi Will. My wife is a Carioca and when the economy crashed in 2007 it took my business with it so we decided to move to Brazil and live cheaply. I soon found out that to maintain the "gringo" lifestyle I wanted is really expensive in Brazil. When it cost me about $600 USD for tires for my $17,000+ USD DL650 I knew it was time to go back to the states. I miss Brazil a lot and think of the rides I had there. One of the best was with Evandro (Fox) http://www.pisteiros.com.br/profiles/blogs/expedicao-brasil-sul-offroad. Beautiful scenery, good and bad weather, great hotel, drinking beer in the sauna after riding the last hour in cold heavy rain. Just a great trip. A couple of my favorites: There are so many more.........I need to go back and ride more. Life is good in the states (with 3 bikes ) but just not the same.

hello all, great thread, i'm in Brasil at the moment, headed northward from Curitiba eventually to Manaus. Has anyone here taken a boat from Manaus to the west, and entered Columbia (or Ecuador)? Dean, I've never heard of anyone crossing from Brazil to Columbia. There is a town in Amazonas named Tabatinga that borders Letícia city in Colômbia. You can get to Tabatinga by boat. I have no idea how to leave Leticia, however. Have you thought about crossing to Guyana? Crashmaster did it back in 2011. Check this post. Just my two cents. Abraços, Linhares
My wife and I are leaving Foz do Iguacu today, headed to Serra Rio do Rastro. With a recommendation like that, we can't miss it! Will try to share a picture soon... We also went from Manaus (okay, well, Boa Vista...to be connected fully in mid-2012...) to Guyana in late 2011, and the road from Lethem to Georgetown was a definite highlight (LINK HERE), right up there with the Transamazonica and BR-319 (LINK HERE). The first post of our Ride Report (see signature) has an index with links to by country. I agree with your thoughts - other than a boat (or plane) I don't know of a way out of Leticia. If someone finds it, post up!
I decided to take the whole Estrada Real (Royal Road) using the original tracks (amazingly downloadable from the web!)... Paraty - Ouro Preto and then Diamantina. Few questions: 1-Is it doable alone? Anyone around here did it? 2-Do I need to change from GS's standard road tires into off-roads? I guess there is off-road involved but nothing hardcore, just hard dust, right? 3-How much time (how long of a vacation) would you take to do it properly? I am not into much sightseeing other than nice views and some pictures, so I will skip most of the historical churches, etc... and I like to ride 5-7 hours a day... BTW plan is to go alone on lack of company for the challenge... should anyone want in, do let me know. Plan is to do it 2nd half of August. Ride on!
Hi, Check out out my ride report on one of my estrada real trips. (Part 1 and part 2). we did it in 9 days, The Estrada Real is a great trip to do... The whole thing (Paraty - Diamantina and back south to Rio de Janeiro) would be around 2000 km and is doable alone. August is a perfect time in terms of weather. It should be dry most of the time. The original roads are mostly hard dirt indeed (few soft patches here and there so stay alert. Unfortunately, they are putting asphalt on many of the dirt roads, and I think that in couple of years from now there might be few dirt roads left... Here's another trip I did in the south (10 days, including the serra do rio do rastro, morretes, Floripa and more) Let me know if you have questions. When you get to Rio de Janeiro, give me a shout. Hi, buddies, I live in south of Brazil, in Parana State, a friend and I traveling to Chui next week. (labor day) We are riding by beach, and come back to Sao Jose dos Ausentes till Blumenau, passing by Rio do Rastro and Corvo Branco in the same day !

Hi Inmates!!! Decision made: I am doing th Estrada Real either late June or early July... Still undecided if we'll go from Paraty to Diamantina via the ER then back on tarmac or do the opposite... most likely the latter. If anyone is onboard and wants to join... let me know... Plan to do it in 10 days (leave on a Friday and be back next Sunday) so we can really get to know the sites which are great! Have all mapped out in GPS and working on a day-to-day planning already! I did it last june; the trip is amazing! Although there is not a very clear ER route (everywhere people call their routes ER, because it is good for tourism, of course), but the track I did –without extensive planning, must admit– was mainly tarmac. Maybe because when leaving home I only knew about the cities I must go thru to keep myself into ER, but didn't knew the precise routes. So I searched in place... But I'm not complaining at all: all tarmac roads where very nice to ride! About your intention to downhill the Cunha-Paraty road, I wouldn't. The road has no maintenance at all and the situation is truly bad. If you don't have great skills and lots of experience (like I don't), you probably will have problems. I did it from Paraty to Cunha and it was not easy... but worth it! One thing outside ER but worthy is the “volta dos 80”, a circuit around the “Parque Nacional de Itatiaia”. Very tricky roads, lots of absolutely amazing water falls and great landscapes. I did it in my way from Itamonte - MG to Visconde de Mauá. UPDATE: remembering more precisely the routes I did, I can't really say that I truly rode the Estrada Real. :) I stopped in Tiradentes and made 2 main deviations: Itamonte and Visconde de Mauá. The trip was awesome, anyway. But maybe I should do the true ER anytime again... hehehe!! Cheers, Rodrigo

Hi Rodrigo, I didn´t see that you is my neighbour, it´s great ! (because we live in Parana State) I do some trips to know some dirty roads near my home, or a little bit far, on pavement roads, only to hanging around. If you like, We could ride together.
