Colorado Discovery Route... sectional tracks

Hey fellows - doing this next week... any one have this broken down into sections...(500 point intervals) Thanks!

There is a 500 point version on their web site?

In the zip file it only has the full route and the one section the oury loop around
To lake city.

Basecamp has a pretty easy-to-use tool for breaking up tracks. And you can do it in Mapsource by just cutting and pasting from the track properties dialog box like you would do with any other text file.

I do this all the time with tracks I download from other guys.

You might do a rough calculation of how many 500 point tracks you would get by breaking up the whole thing. If it is more than your GPS unit can handle, you can break the full track up into >500 point segments and then filter down to 500.

I believe the result would still be plenty good for navigation.

HTCA - I went to their Web site and got the tracks and they are broken down by day. Maybe look again? Love to say hi if you get time through Durango area before or after the ride. I have one of your controllers and love it.

Garmin Base camp software
opened the raw file....it shows the separate tracks sections.


and I the created routes( using each tracks).

double click the tracks... the select "create a route" form the bottom of the open window...as shown...






see here .... highlighted the route... then select "file" "export" "export selection" as shown






Emailed the routes to myself to get the routes to my Iphone5 with the "pathaway" app software...

used the software to push to routes to my 60csX!



created 6 routes with the 2 go "arounds"....just like it shows up on there web site...

Yes great, but he was asking for 500 point Tracks not Routes.

yes sorry about that... I will delete edit post.... from what I can tell a route make it more efficient... (takes out the unnecessary intermediate points)

I like the separate sections... make it easy to manage since it is a multi-day trip.

If you read about long trips, a lot of people do use routes but they have huge risks of autorouting. Most experts advise always have tracks for your trip, they are idot proof. Most people with hand helds only use tracks.

That is exactly the kind of advice I need... because I have always only used a GPSs to tell "where I am" in the back country... referencing topo book maps. I will add the tracks also! Thanks for the advice I loaded up both...

Warning.... tracks on my 60csX is limited to 500. the track was truncated... end section was cut off.... I see why now I hate messing with these devices... I have enough to learn everyday at work with new electronic control systems, when i get home i like to turn the brain off!

Yes very common knowledge, last generation units uses 500 point tracks.
Go to COBDR web site, download 500 point track file.
Download file to your 60 and you are done. There is no messing.

yeap that's what I did.... and I renamed each track s1,s2,s3,s4,s5, and s6... So I could view... otherwise the tag is so big you cant see where you are going...
also a note routes are limited by 250 points. sometimes common is not so common

What do you mean by this? This is a point to point ride with no crossovers so just turn every track on and go. It will just look like one long track from end to end. No need to know where one ends and next starts.

When I click on the cobdr-gps-tracks.zip, in mapsource I get an error saying it is not a supported file type.
What am I doing wrong?

i also have a 60csx and use that 500pts gpx file in Mapsource.
there is a 13 character label limitation for each track name in that unit, so use it's best to rename each track with a code you understand.
i used Sec.1 etc. and Gas.Tride etc and Alt.Sc.3-easy easy. right click on each one and select properties.

i also changed the coloring (right click on track for properties). i like green as my main track as it pops out well on the 60 screen. i changed the gas spurs red as that's a good pay attention to me color. and those easy bypasses became magenta.

anyway after tracks are loaded onto a 60 they are hard displayed on the screen and are always there.

they other thing i added was a way point where each section changes so i know how far i am to completing that. this gives you approx 6 conservative days of riding and we do it in 3 moving along.

that is a windows zip file and is a bunch of files compressed into that one file. you need to unzip it. w/ windows vista and above you right click on it and say un-compress here.

windows xp use http://www.winzip.com/win/en/index.htm
after winzip is installed, right click on file and then select unzip here. then you will see the gpx files to work with.

mac has built in un-zip capabilities or use stuff it http://www.stuffit.com/

i actually use a program called winrar which in addition to un-compressing zip files also works with rar files and many others. many geek style files come rared, not zipped. http://www.rarlab.com/

i'd say he just wants to know where each section changes, that's all.

If the 500 point sections were formed by just cutting the first 500 points, then next and so on, then the section has no meaning. If the sections go from gas to gas like I do on some rides then there is a waypoint for gas at the end of the section.
