Unless you have a great sequence you don't want to interrupt, limit one video angle to around 15 seconds give or take. Try the different angles already suggested, along with things before/during/after the ride.

TELL A STORY.

Have fun with it. Every ride is a journey; show more than just the road. As already suggested, show the other riders if you have company.

Imagine you want to tell your mom/brother/best friend about the journey. What would you capture on that day's ride? If you stop for a while to check out a stream, show the stream.

Very memorable videos have 95% character, 5% riding. Or if they have a lot of riding, they change things up repeatedly throughout the video.

What editing software are you guys using?

The video I just edited was done using Cyberlink PowerDirector 12. I like it, but have a lot to learn yet.

I've read this thread start to finish. I found very little reference to what resolution and frame rates are most successful in capturing our kind of riding. How about sharing some information on that aspect?

I found a handy printable cheat sheet along my way while trying to learn to do this correctly. Honestly I am still at somewhat of a loss.

In the article that accompanied the cheat sheet he recommends that we shoot in 2.7k 30fps wide. Has anyone tried this? If so, how is the video? I plan to experiment with it this weekend.

1080 60 medium is your friend.

Best all round for action & helmet mounted as well as it's not too wide which will include too many trees on each side basically.

PS, you may need to go super wide though if the Doc is riding with you!!!

Number 1 thing that pisses me off with motorcycle videos: people get rid of the sound of the motorcycle? And the wind? Why? That kills it for me. Check the pro videos, they seem to always have the motorcycle sounds, in various degrees of mixing with voice-over or music.

Looking at your cheat sheet, it covers so many different variations for viewing your video. For me, I shoot 1080p @ 60 fps most of the time. I do this because I have a large TV in the living room that I like to watch and show my videos from. This resolution for me is what works best. If I were only uploading to YouTube for viewing on a computer or smartphone, then I may choose a setting with lower resolution and/or frame rate.

I have had a lot of issues with the audio from my vids. At 720/30 the audio and video ended up looking and sounding like slow motion in raw form. I sped up the video but the audio was useless. So, I edited music in to take it's place. Additionally my new TR is so quiet you cannot hear it running except when you are cranking it hard. Otherwise just wind noise. I don't find wind noise acceptable in the finished video.

I intend to experiment with my helmet microphone which unplugs from my communicator (same type plug) and try it in the camera for better audio.

Nobody at my house cares to watch those videos except me. I end up posting on YouTube, Vimeo or SmugMug. I do stream the vids to my TV when I have finished editing to see what they look like.

I've set the camera to 2.7 30 Wide for my next trip which will be a short road jaunt this afternoon. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

It has different elements, you hear it (well, after the sound kicks in!) as it was, & there are people talking & doing their own thing!!

Also, you would put many off-road/dualsport riders to shame with the way you make it look so easy to just get on your bike & ride in whatever conditions prevail....

Once you commit to video, you must have numerous RAM mounts, IMO. They're about $7 each x 4 (minimum), $28.

Unless you're on single track, the camera shouldn't be on the lead bike (unless aimed to the rear). Yes, dust can be a problem, but that means you just have to ride closer to the bike making the dust, like over his left (or right) shoulder. If you guys are pretty good riders, remember the camera lens is a wide angle. Tell them to tailgate you if they want to show up in the video, or they'll look like they're in another time zone.

As already said, one tune all the way thru, needed some kind of variety.

I just bought a video camera and can't wait for the weather to break so I can learn how to use the darn thing, just like you're doing right now. Driving around with a dash cam just doesn't get it.

lol yeah it was a little sketchy. No studs, I was on slightly worn T63's. As long as I kept the bike upright it did ok. I did go down in slow motion once turning onto the street. Unfortunately the camera wasn't on at the time.

I went out the next day when the snow was starting to melt on the roads. It did fine on the street again, but no traction on the trails. You know it's bad when you're aiming for the mud so you can get traction..

I'll try to put that video together if it looks worth watching.

What are you not happy with? Those looked like decent examples of what the Hero3+ Black is capable of. For what it is worth, take a look at the following video tutorial about ProTune and how it can be used. It may be what you are looking for.

Yeah, I've seen that Kevin. Thanks. I don't know what it is I am looking for exactly. I know clarity has been an issue for me. The videos get super compressed when posting to YouTube so getting it the best I can before it goes there is what I am aiming for.

Upload to Vimeo instead - it's much faster in the uploading and playback, and doesn't mess with the quality the way YouTube does.
