Has been a long time since posting on this thread but I have a serious matter on my experience with a tyre on Woody's rim. Installed a Heidenau K60 150/70-18 on my Woody's 2.5 rim although had been advised not to do so because of clearances before my trip to Pantanal (border between Bolivia and Brasil). Clearances were OK to the swingarm both front and sides, pressure 35 psi and bike fully loaded with topcase, Giant Loop and soft side bags for a 12 day and 7000 kms (4600 mi) trip.

This is when at home back from the trip.

On saturday 07 september I joined 20+ Super Tenere's on a day trip with some off road tracks with lot of stones. The bike was unloaded and pressure normal 33 psi. When loading fuel on the return trip I noticed some back wobling but kept on until I had to stop. The tyre looked like this:

Went to the dealer with the tyre on the rim and they got in contact with the factory in Germany who gave this answer:

So I returned to my Metzeler Sahara Enduro 3 140/80-18
    End of the story.

According to the last sentence of the manufactures reply, maybe not.

    Just curious, Roberto...

Why did you specify such a narrow rear rim in the first place? The stock OEM Yamaha rim is not that narrow?

    I don't get it... :dunno

You really didn't expect a tire that wide to live happily on a rim that narrow, did you? I mean, really... a 150-size tire on a 2.5" rim? :huh

just ran across the latest news from Thagua/Roberto.....

my two cents is that i have to agree with Heidena's Pierre Schaeffer in assessing the cause and results of fitting such a wide low profile tire to the 2.5'' rim...

For the vertically challenged we recommend staying with the 17'' rim/tire sizes....using 3.5'' width for more off- road riding or 4.25'' for mainly road service...

FYI,,low profile 50/60/70 series tires demand wider rims ,,,,all this has been documented before in various threads.:deal

i concur with Waspman's and Cam's feedback that if you do more roadwork that we convert your rim to a 3.5 x18 and stick with 130-140 higher profile tires.....

OBTW,,,regarding the face book business,,ya noticed it is the ultimate tool to get a manufacturers attention....in this case IMHO i'd remove/retract the posts because you are operating on thin ice so to speak....Consider it an experiment on your part that failed....you over reached and it back -fired....

FYI the recommended tire pressure of 2.8 bar = 40 psi a nominal number for fully loaded bike of this size/weight for highway use....you can air down for slower off road riding with improved handling circa 28-32psi,,,,trouble comes when ya head back on the slab and start cruising you'll end up overheating the tires from too much flex in the tires shoulders.....i'm posting the tire fitment chart here once again so you have some guidelines.....when we provide the slightly narrower 3.5 rim it doesn't distort the tire as much as what happened in Roberto's situation,,,and as you all have reported squeeze it too much and it will actually increase the diameter..go back to this picture and look carefully at all the little air escape nubs as well as the how the tire is mainly worn in the center....this is counter productive...ideally you want to scrub /wear out the tire across the entire contact surface available.

This chart has been compiled to give an overview of fitments possible, for more specific information contact your tire manufacturer. The shaded area shows the possible rims for a tire size including the recommended fitment. There is also an online tire selector here.

    FYI:
    NOTICE
    .
1,,, the correlation between tire size width and aspect ratio !!!! BWOE: tires size/width of 3'' means it is 3'' wide and 3'' tall ie an aspect ratio of 100%.....

2,,, old tire sizes were in inches ,newer stuff uses metric

3,,, the wider the tire the wider the rims will be

4,,, the lower the aspect ratio the WIDER THE RIM MUST BE !!!

5,,,when dialing in a better solution for YOUR riding style/needs,,,we opt for a better Rx tire size/rim width /diameter for your specific needs

6,,, these needs aren't linited to the riding style over specific terreain or needs like cruising the slab or playing /competing in the dirt...but also like where in the world you'll be riding in...there are countless stories of riders being stuck somewhere with a shredded tire and it'll take ya days/weeks/months to get a replacement:eek1:huh:cry:cry

    hope this clarifies the issue..
Thagua,,let's get you situated ,,,because it's in all our best interest to create better solutions and not get ourselves into troubled territory:wink:

Hi Woody, now how do I change a 2.5" to 3.5" rim (18)? Remember that when I ordered the actual front (21) and rear (18) complete wheels from you there was no 3.5" available. Can you tell me what should I order to change the rim keeping the other components?
Will erase the Facebook post and shut up for the moment But if you read on the previous pages of this post you have differnt opinions from Wasp and Cams
    Thanks,
    Roberto

hi roberto,,,3.5 width is a satndard size that we often use,,,perhaps they were not in stock or in the country at the time of your order...i'll double check and let you know.

swapping the rims is easy,,we'll do all the prep work here to maintain the Superlace set-up

We can get a 3.5 x 18 Black excel rim prepped for the spokes/nipples that you have with your 2.5 x 18 wheel. It would be 350 + shipping for the rim, and you can re-use the spokes/nipples to lace it up.

It will take 2 week's to have it ready to ship, give us an email at woodyswheelworks@gmail.com or call us 303-936-0232 to get the rim coming.

    Thanks Zach

    Ok..

I've been watching and reading all of the great work all of you have been doing to sort out the Tenere wheel sizing issue....appreciate the efforts.

Here's what I want to do, and according to all of the searching I've done through these threads, it should work???:

    1.85 x 21 front with a 90/90 Heidi

    3.5 x 18 rear with a 150/70 Heidi

    Stock hubs relaced

Everything should bolt up, and the only mods being a new cross-over brake line in front, raise the front fender and potential lengthening of the center and side stands.

    That sound right???

    Thanks

I have over the years purchased several wheel sets from you Woody for my KTM950's.

I love my S10, but now need it to do more heavy duty off road..

OEM cables and wiring harness fit...

    ABS and TSC still work?

    speedo still work and accurate?

I am interested for sure.. but want to swap back and forth with my standard wheels..

    Joe

    Hi,

We can build you a set of wheel's for your ST1200 using oem hub's or we do have a front billet hub that uses KTM rotor's, but also re-use's the oem ABS and TSC that works' great. The speedometer will only change with wheel size change's, but it should be ran off the rear wheel not the front.

Using a 21/18 combo will be much better for off-road riding, the front fender and brake lanes will need to be modified though as seen throughout this thread. The 18'' can't fit very tall knobby tire's, but with 150/70-18 tire's it will work great. Otherwise using a 17 x 3.5 with a 150/70-17 tire will be great and has a lot of tire choice's between the 140/80-17 and 150/70-17.

A set of wheel's can be anywhere from $1,900-3,000 depending on if you just want wheel's without rotor's of if you want the complete package with rotor's and sensor's, also if you want the wheel's sealed for tubeless tire's or not. The only issue is we don't have a 21'' tubeless option as of yet.

If you would like to order anything, it's best to email us at woodyswheelworks@gmail.com

    Thanks Zach

Yes the stock brake cable's work fine with the 21'', it's just the oem fender has the original brake cable holder's in them, so they would need to be modified to fit a new higher fender.

    Thanks Zach

    Hi Woody,
So do we know which skid plates will and will it play nice with your 21" conversion?
I'm pretty sure my ACD will not as I have skid marks on it from my stock front wheel with a 19" Hiedenau on it... A 21" sounds great but I need to avoid getting pitched over the bars.

just rolled back into town,,will check for you,,,i've been out of the loop for a while.. i remember earlier that one of the skid plates just needed a smack with a dead-blow to provide adequate clearance:wink:

so we'd need to know what model/brand skid plate ya got ,,,pics would help for giving advice...

While you're at it... Do the stock headers or the Arrow headers clear better? jauneV's post over on ST showed a bit of action with the Unicross tire...

So I've resolved to modify my skid plate, use a 2.5 filter and that we're just not sure about the Arrow headers...
But the tires... I've dug through the thread and as best I can tell this is confirmed. Please correct or add as necessary.

So, I maneged to wreck both my wheels at the same time this weekend :cry
Only the rim need to be replace, but i might as well go the Woodys way....
I was planing to have the option to eventualy have two set of wheels, but I think that option is gone....
