whitey the motoped

ok. this isn't totally a standard build thread like the guzzi, which i basically fabbed everything from scratch (and may one day actually finish ). this is more of an assembly of parts. i'll do some cool custom stuff just because i can't leave the cnc machine quiet for too long, but nothing spectacular. kinda like orange county choppers sorta work. in addition there isn't really a build thread for a motoped that i have found which doesn't feed some bullshit about how perfect everything is, nor do they have the details of the whole assembly.


so here we go. gotta start somewhere. why not build a stand? welded this thing up using scrap that was lying around the shop. the hinge is to adjust engine and bike angle later on so it all sits nice and flat like.

sorry. had to run off there to the powder coaters to drop the frame off...

so picked up a new 125cc engine with 4 speed manual clutch and mounted the bad boy to the stand.

here's the stuff that comes from motoped in their base "frame only" kit. they do use a special hub, but it wasn't in the box. next step is to find out where the hell the hun is! frame removed and dropped off at the powder coater this afternoon. going to leave all the other bits in their sexy annodized state

the muffler does not appear to be coated with anything. may have to look at either powder coating it, or some spiff high temp coating.

sorry mate... it has been on pause due to a major move, followed by reno, followed by trying to make some money. this motoped shouldn't take too long, then back to the goose full time! i have some new plans for the tank and seat to make it more of a hooligan than an old skule cafe bike.

long gone. i just hinted in the thread a while back and someone was at my house with cash. loads of them out there though. i believe moto international in seattle has them in stock.

Are the parts you chose better than those that come in the complete kit?

Did you save money buying the parts yourself vs the complete kit?

not sure i'll have the patience to do a full build list. i will list each component as i assemble it though... i decided i wanted something totally original. the kit is cool and all, but it has chinese shocks and generic bits. i think i'm in the parts for about a grand (or more) than the kit would have cost. finished goal is about $3500 - $4000, then it's going to get a big "race shop" engine.

all the small sub-assemblies as boring as they are, have to be assembled. 15 minutes and we have a front wheel
- halo sas 26"
- maxxis holy roller 2.4"
- continental hd tube
- avid 203mm rotor torqued to 55 in/lbs

I thought I would chime in and let you all know the Motopeds full bike kit is not a bunch of generic Chinese parts. In fact its just the opposite. FYI the suspension is designed specific to the Motoped (re-valved and re-sprung) by the same company that builds Chad Reeds Supercross / Motocross suspension. While I don't doubt the quality of the stock build, I would rather have the build that Loadedagain is doing, even for the extra $$$. As a bicycle mechanic for 16 years, one of the things that I love about mountain bikes is that you can pick every single part to be exactly what you want. I've never been impressed with anything from DNM, and both Rockshox and Fox are premier suspension. Especially lately Rockshox has really done some great work on their products. Halo over Alex any day. Avid over Hayes any day. And really? a square taper crank-set on the stock build? This isn't 1992. The bottom bracket/crankset interface has gone through too many incarnations over the last two decades to see a square taper BB on anything more than a cruiser. I don't doubt that the stock build is fine for those that don't know better. And, I also bet that the build that Loadedagain is doing will make a far better final product to those who do know better, IMHO.
