I just read this on Borderland Beat. Apparently the Autodefenses have taken over the town where Harry most likely went missing. Maybe there is an opportunity here for finding Harry.

"Huetamo has a population of less than 50k, nonetheless it is a important drug war city and a key city in the Tierra Caliente region. The city and surrounding areas have been plagued with kidnappings and murders. Highway 51 runs through the area from
Zitácuaro and Huetamo sits adjacent to 51.

Huetamo was thought to possibly be, the site of the kidnapping of New Yorker Harry Devert. The city and surrounding areas are cartel controlled by the “H3” and the “Los Viagras” organized crime groups."

I have a feeling he was in an accident and has not been found yet. If any group had kidnapped him, they surely would have requested a ransom by now. Another rumor I read was he was kidnapped because he was thought to be DEA. If that was the case, and they didn't want to request a ransom, but kill him instead, they would have made his body easily found to make an example of him.

This story has been ignored by the media since the first report. If there is nothing to sensationalize the media doesn't give a rats ass. It's too bad we may never know what happened to this fella. On the other hand, us travellers from Canada and the USA for the most part, travel our countries safely for the most part. This leaves us a little unprepared while planning our trips to areas where crime, accidents, lax law enforcement etc are problems. I hope there is closure in this case, I also hope that we, as travellers learn form this story.

Ever since “American adventurer” Harry Devert went missing in January en route to the World Cup, a frantic search has been conducted, with friends and family rallying through the “Help Find Harry” Facebook page.

But on Thursday, Mexican authorities confirmed that Devert’s corpse had been located near a Pacific Coast beach town.

Devert’s green Kawasaki motorcycle had been found near the southern Mexican town of La Union last week, and authorities said genetic testing confirmed that a body found near the bike, chopped up in two plastic bags, was Devert’s.

Marijuana and cocaine were found along with the dismembered corpse, authorities said.

The region is a hotbed of drug cartel-related violence.

Devert, 33, had alerted loved ones to “crazy military stuff” that might delay his trip shortly before his disappearance, according to VICE.

“Just got an hour and a half long escort out of some area it was too dangerous for me to be,” he messaged his girlfriend, Sarah Schiear, VICE reported. “Apparently there’s another military escort waiting for me in some other town.”

Devert, a stock trader from New York, had been chronicling his journeys on his blog, “A New Yorker Travels.”

“There is so much good and so much to love in this world,” Devert wrote on his blog. “I believe life is short and that we need to make the most of it, and while many people say this, I truly try and live my life accordingly.”

Supposedly involves the Mexican military, drug cartels,
and an anonymous tipster on Facebook.
