That would be a nice touch. I get the overall mileage but can you get the distance between two points? I have to back up (or delete) my points when it starts to get more than I can travel in a day....Maybe I'm just missing it.Great little app though, thanks.
@TheOriginalBugMagnet thanks for the feedback An update: since some days it is possible to look for mountain passes, gas station and markets (if defined in OSM - openstreet map):
SJust gave this program a try - and threw a very challenging set of waypoints at it. I am very pleased with the ease of use - this is exactly what the average route/track-planner needs with no extraneous BS. Thank you for your efforts, this might have just became my "go-to" track planner! I did run into a snag though ........ after over 350 miles of really twisty road layout, I hit a roadblock "route calculation error 500". It would not let me input any further waypoints from that point, but it would at least let me export what I had. What I love: 1. Simple, 1 point and click waypoint entry 2. No issues with "out and back" appendages off the main track - easier/more reliable than ANY other program I've seen to date. 3. Made every track turn exactly as I wanted 4. Probably the quickest program I've come across to date to just "open and lay out a route", pronto! What I'm not crazy about: 1. I loathe both Chrome and Firefox - I still prefer IE. 2. Finding the export to track, route, ect feature was cumbersome. Finally found it under "Share", I'm not a social-media person and am not familiar/in-sync with these modern social-media derived acronyms, lol. When I did find it, it seemed to automatically export my track to the "downloads" folder. I'd rather have the option to export it into any folder I want. Perhaps that feature is there, but it does not jump out at me. What I'd like to see added: 1. Ability to download a map section aka several states, and lay out routes while not connected to the internet. 2. Work with IE and Apple (ipad) 3. A more "obvious" menu and export function. I like the track (no pun intended) you are on - please don't deviate from the preface of having a simple, basic route/track planner. Don't try to make this a "trip" planner, aka FURKOT :)
I like this program you've made. Even I can use it Probly me but I couldn't get it down load the route. Using Chrome.
@itlives thanks! - in Chrome export should work fine, but be aware the default browser setting is to save the file in the Download folder. You can change the behaviour in Chrome options, so it will ask were to save.
@scootertrog thanks a lot! You hit the point, I created this for fun just to have the quickest possible way to create a multipoint route, from any device (and export it to GPSr). And right... I should stick to simplicity, although I add functionalities time to time. About finding the export button, what would you suggest as a more obvious menu? I like the full-screen map so I reduced the menus to a minimum, but maybe the GPX "Export" fits better in the "Save/Load" Menu? On the download folder, see post above: it's a browser setting, not something mappite can control. Max length of a route is about 3k miles, the "route calculation error" might be because of performance issues or one of the last points does not allow a veichle to move further, pls. post the link if you can. With IE, export does not work, while with iOS I guess you need to have an app that can consume GPX to be able to download the file - I'll look at this. Offline usage... would be nice but technically pretty difficult!!! What I'm looking at now is a way to authenticate users to save routes so that one can find them in any device he owns. Thanks again for the feedbacks, really appreciated! gspeed
Sorry - I just whipped out the route as a test and deleted it after I was done. I know the area in question quite well, so when I get a chance I'll lay out another route (on a different computer) and see if I run into the same issue.
I just tried mappite and it is the easiest to use route creating program that I have tried. I love it. Can a route be deleted from the map after it is created, so that another route can be created without closing and reopening mappite?
@geolpilot... thanks! To delete an existing route, there should be a red "x" next to the total route length/time ( in the bottom/left menu box)
. Wow. This is the best map route-planner experience I have ever had. THANKS! I am quite NEW to working with GPX! Normally, I can crash one of these in a few key-strokes, or spend several hours trying to learn it and walk away frustrated. This one has some merit. I just messed around about an hour putting together a test route. The learning curve was not too bad! I found out early on, that "right click" seemed to serve as the "undo" command? I confess I ran my whole map route, and then when I went to save it I realized I was in EXPLORER and the program or file export would not be supported. Before bailing on it, I simply copied the whole web address-bar, and headed for Google Chrome. I paste-dumped it into the address bar of Chrome and there was my map again. I seemed to have been able to export it fine as a .GPX for way points and or route. Hopefully will get to dump it in the Garmin and field test some of it Friday. Screenshot (some zig-zagging and backtracking, but I am covering some specific stops with some slow gravel roads and lots of secondary two lane) Minnesota + mostly Wisconsin 409 miles Based on the calculated travel time (over 12 hours?) I wont be running this in one day.
^ There must have been a recent change or update? The first time I laid out a route, I only got the green line that follows the roads. The last time I laid out a route, I got both the red "waypoint-to-waypoint" track and the green route. Is there a way to turn off the red "waypoint-to-waypoint" info. I do NOT want to export the red "waypoint-to-waypoint" info for street-based riding.
This looks pretty cool! Is there a way to export the trip and load it into an iPhone app (such as Maps, GoogleMaps, etc)? Or does it require a Garmin type dedicated GPS device? If not, is anyone aware of an easy way to select an exact route (avoiding highways) and use your iPhone as the GPS?
Avoiding highways was indeed a feature when I composed a test. I was also able to "enable" gravel for some back roads.
I guess my question is: Can I get turn by turn voice navigation out of this to my Bluetooth headset? (Either directly or by exporting to some app on my iPhone)
Yes. Just export it as a GPX file and import it into your GPS app. I use Mapfactor Navigator on a 6 inch Android and voice guidance to my bluetooth headset works well.
Simple. When you save the gpx file, it goes directly onto your "Downloads" folder on your hard drive. Move that file into either Dropbox or email it to yourself. I really like Galileo Pro for my iphone GPS program, so you can either just go to Dropbox and do an "open with" Galileo Pro, or open the email with the gpx file and then do the same "open with" Galileo Pro.
