help i need any large screen gps

hi guys
well with having to use glasses for reading and distance i need your help, ive had my zumo 550 for some years and its easy to use but its got to a point that i need to stop and put my glasses on to read the bloody thing lol
so what i need is a bigger sreen gps ( if there is one),also it must be easy to use and be made for a motorbike


please any links,info, your reviews good or bad will help me big time

Why not wear glasses with your helmet? Or have prescription goggles made up.

I always picked my glasses frames so they would fit with my helmet.

Perhaps a Samsung 7" Tablet with a GPS app? - Id be unsure how you would mount it on the bike thiough - maybe just in the sleeve of a tank bag and earphone?

Used to have the same problem with my 550 but got a pair of sunnies with a reading pane at the bottom of the lenses and it worked a treat! $15 at safety wear shops.

a) Glasses
Yes to wearing them under your helmet.
You can get multi focal ones - top bit does the distance stuff and bottom for the near stuff.
You can also get half frame glasses - top bit is cut off leaving the bottom bit for reading ... don't like the safety aspect of them under the helmet ... the thought of them being pushed back into my eyes puts me off. Full framed glasses get your eye brows in the way.

b) Large Screen.
Tablet will be the cheapest way to go. And OSM will probably be the data source for your map - many different apps use that data, good bye Garmin data.None of these are 'made for a motorbike' .. tank bag will be one way to use them.
Apple ipad ... mapout looks to be the app to use.
Android ... OSMand or mapme or ..

Mick I am blind too and have a lot of trouble reading anything close. I did some research and there is visors available that have a lens in them also sunglasses that are bi focal for as little as $20. I settled for a pair like the one pictured for $60 Polarised also. (Feebay USA) There are so many styles available and way cheaper than going to the Optometrist. I have the big screen Garmin Zumo 660 and bought it for the size of the screen.
I don't have any trouble reading or texting while riding my bike now.

I got some from a webby address in Adelaide. $70 plus post. And for those times I wear goggles try Goggleman.

I too have been doing the research on another gps. My 550 touch screen failed and im waiting on a fleabay replacement $9.
But wanting a bigger screen i though a glaaxy type but could ot find a cover. Then found samsung made a waterproof table a few years ago... stopped production..
So for a tablet type a company called Blackview make phones that a ruggedized and good prices. Then can run an Oziexplorer app or whatever on android. No sim needed. Bv6000 or upwards.
Haven't got one yet but have seen them seem good.
Id keep the garmin for street nav

Cheapest solution :

Wot he sed. I bought 2 pairs of sunnies with readers in them at 2.0x, they are just perfect for the bike, less than $20 from memory. You can keep your GPS as-is, I get mine from a bloke in my village, he'll be at the Bega Bike Show this weekend selling them too.

Next cheapest option :

Google "gps speedo". A 2-inch readout is plenty big for numbers, for $99.

You also state "well with having to use glasses for reading and distance", this implies you need transition lenses. Just getting sunnies with readers won't assist with distance. Your vision problem is more than just reading a GPS by the description you give, so find a whole solution that covers all your needs, otherwise you'll still be stopping to swap glasses.

UPDATE : polaroids are great walking around and stuff, but can give you mirages and artifacts through a helmet visor. I use non-polaroids in my helmet these days.

The bi focal Safety sun glasses work great, but thats not going to help with your distance sight. Neither will a bigger GPS screen probably. I'm thinking you need to visit your optometrist and get some prescription Transition sunglasses.

I've got a TomTom rider, teeny bit bigger than a Zumo but still can't see the bugger. Got a 620 in my truck, still can't see the bugger. Can't see the instruments, can't see to eat, I blame bloody smart phones cause up till a couple of years ago the baby blues were fine. I've got safety transition polarised graduated plastic frames from SpecSpenders that were roughly $400 with the test and all the bullshit but I could claim the lot, take some practice tho.

You could always go the Hema tablet but very spendy and bloody big.

Hey MickD, have you tried the Garmin Montana? And do you use tracks or routes? The track on the Montana is a lot easier to see than on any other Garmin device in my experience. Also the screen size is actually the same dimensions as the Zumo 660 which is correctly referenced as being quite large.

Clear bifocal safety glass if you also ride at night.

For $3 you could get a magnifying screen....

I use an iPad mini in a lifeproof case.
Big screen is great as is the ability to run any number of apps and maps.
2 issues.
1. The screen isn't glove friendly but there are ways around this.
2. It's not bright enough and it hard to see when the sun is on it.

The 590 has a bigger screen.

I had the Zumo 550.

I upgraded to the Zumo 590 (now the 595). Bigger screen, same Garmin tools and usability (for better or worse )

More features than the 550. Handles tracks way better. I don't use bluetooth, music etc so cannot comment on them.

Not cheap and if I was to do it now, I would seriously look at an Android device.
