I don't know your specific route which of course can make all the difference in the world, but I've so far been able to create multi hundred mile routes with no more than a handful of waypoints. I start with the end points and see what happens. Then I add a mid point to force it to use a road I want. If needed I keep splitting the segments in half. Usually after adding 3-5 additional waypoints the route is exactly as I like. I'm doing this in basecamp. Convert the route to a track and upload both to the GPS.

Creating a route 1 turn at a time has never worked well for me. It's lots of work and the GPS usually screws it up, anyway.

+1 I have found it works better to put the intermediate via points in the middle of a road segment I want rather than at intersections.

    Q 2, yes; Q 1, no.

Q 2, backlight vs. battery save, you're correct and I had them both on. (I wasn't "confusing" them; I didn't know that battery save existed although I must have seen it years ago.)

Q 2 grew out of Q 1 -- does the backlight change intensity in bright sun? I doubt that it does, and it just doesn't matter to me any more. I can read the map very well, rain or shine or direct sun.

Anyone know what they're charging for out-of-warranty repair (replacement) these days?

I got home last night after a bike ride and there's a hole where my power button used to be :bluduh

It's $160ish. Replacement with like new refurbished unit. Mine was about 2 months past warranty and they replaced it anyway!

If your talking about the unit the way it is pre-replacement I'll consider it... If I'm sheeling out $160 it won't make sense. I am pretty much using it 99% on my bicycle and it's ok on there but since the unit is going to be "down" one way or the other I'm going to see if I can put one of the other old units on the bike... if that works... well...

I have a new Montana that I'm trying to set up the same as an existing Montana.
Where in the directory structure can I find the file that the custom settings are saved in??

There’s no one ‘settings’ file. You need to copy over the \Profiles and \Shortcuts folders as well as \Gpx to get close to your previous setup, then adjust the rest.

Thanks Shu and Emmbeedee, Unfortunately I can't try the suggestion. My Montana was acting weird ( 5 mile route taking 7 minutes by car, 85 minutes in Motorcycle profile and 7 minutes in Walking profile!!!) so after talking to Garmin I shipped it back to them. They have lost it (claim they never got it even though I have a signature on delivery) and are now telling me they won't have a replacement unit in until October 6th (they received mine on 18th Sept and told me it would be a 2 day turn-around). To say I'm less than impressed and just a bit furious would be an understatement.
