@Uke - where Oh where did you get that fantastic crossbar for the GPS to mount on ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Good morning, that crossbar mount for my GPS was born out of necessity, which we all know is a mutha. I already had the National Cycle Deflector Shield on my bike with its standard mounts. Wanting to get the GPS in a quality line of sight, I measured and figured and speculated and finally understood where I wanted it to go. The Garmin Nuvi 66 is actually the second unit I've had on this bike, the original Magellan had run its course and needed an upgrade. Fortunately, mounting the Garmin was pretty straight forward with the existing mount I had already fabbed. The crossbar is a piece of aluminum strap (bar stock, 1" x 1/8" ) bent to shape with a slight twist added to better bring the panel to my line of sight. It is attached with some clamps I had left over from another project that happened to fit well the mounting hardware of the Deflector Shield. The original Magellan mount attached directly to the aluminum strap cross piece. When I switched to the Garmin I had to adapt its ball mount 90 degrees hence a small section of aluminum 90 bolted to the cross piece to which the Garmin ball mount is attached. The GPS comes off in seconds which I like so it can go in the tail box if I stop somewhere that the GPS might disappear. This GPS takes its power and more importantly GPS signal from its power cord. I made a female cigarette plug into a Battery Minder plug to connect the GPS to the battery via the hard wired Battery Minder pigtail. These connects are under the tool tray under the seat so it is no big deal to disconnect the Battery Minder prior to a ride and connect the pigtail to the GPS power lead. Logically, the GPS power cord lays along side the bike's wiring harness along the backbone up to the steering head and up to the GPS mount.

Enough words, hopefully these pics will better explain the install and pieces. These are crops from recent images of my bike as a whole so the quality isn't what I usually try to present. If you'd like further details or photos of a specific item, just ask.

I love your GPS mounts which fully satisfy the KISS principle. In my old work truck I had a section of oak flooring shaped to hold the belt clip on the back of my cell phone mounted to the dash board near the steering wheel. El cheapo hands free phone.

@Uke : screw the further explanation. Just make me one for my 1150 GSA and I'll buy you beers for the rest of your life.

I'm considering drilling my screen for a ball mount for my phone and my Valentine. But fear the weight of them bouncing and vibrating will eventually crack and break the screen. I need a crossbar or shelf and can't quite figure how to get it done. The space above my gauges is perfect, I just need to solve how to make it useful.

Can you show a side view of the screen and gauge panel? It looks like there is a mount point an inch or so above the bottom of the screen on the side. I can't tell how much clearance you have between the screen and the shield integral with the top of your gauge panel, but you might be able to take some similar aluminum strap (1" x 1/8") and make two bends above side legs that would then fit on the inside of the screen mounts. That is if I'm seeing mount bolts / screws near the bottom sides of the screen.

That is if you want the phone and detector high above the gauge pane which seems fine to me. It might be a lot easier to attach both to the handle bar cross brace.

I was there. It was insane. Drugs sex and Rock and Roll everywhere. When Evil floated down into the canyon the crowds rushed foreword flattening the cyclone fences and pushing everyone to the canyon edge. Only one person was pushed over to his death if I recall. Crazy event.

I also fear that stretching the screen over a flat bar on each side will over stress the screen.
