Was anyone able to ride the trial at this years AMA vintage days? If so how was it? I was unable to because life got in the way. Thanks, emti.
I am also interested. I rode it when it was AHRMA and there were 24 riders in my class alone. I rode it the first year the AMA took over, and I don't think there were 24 riders in the entire Trials. I have heard that it's a lot better now, and hope to go next year.
I rode it, but it was my first mid-ohio, so I don't have past perspective. Run by / laid out by TI folks (Trials Inc) and they did a great job with the sections. Over 100 riders I think, and lot's of spectators watching the near sections, so good exposure for trials. Better terrain for sections than I would have guessed. Lots of talent riding the A line, I rode the B line and had a good time :)
They did have a youth class or two. I saw three TY 80s and an Oset 12.0; could've been more. The course was a lot dryer than last year. The biggest problem is that there were 110 riders, up by 50 over the previous year. The 11 sections were laid out in clumps of 3 or 4, with exit gates in those clumps much too close to entrance gates of the next section, which led to logjams of bikes. TI pushed the end time forward by 2 hours over the planned end time of 1:30. Even with being allowed to start on any section, it took over 2 hours on Loop 1. I had to be at work the following morning 4 states away and had to leave after one loop. It was still a fantastic VMD, though. Rider numbers were up dramatically over last year in all of the off-road disciplines. I don't follow the road racing, so not sure if their numbers were also up. After a hot/humid Thursday, Friday and Saturday were in the '70's and breezy. It was a bit warmer on Sunday. Two extra bikes we have no room for followed the hubs back home.
It was a fun weekend . I hadn't been there since 2008 where I can say I took the claim or blame of being the last TM after the AMA / AHRMA falling out before Trials Inc . took over . Unfortunately didn't come to ride , but was great seeing some old ( grey haired ) faces . I'm a bit on the fence for inclusion of moderns in the event though , but hey the more the merrier ... and yeah I could see that sections could have been spread out a bit but still , Kudos for T.I. for their hard work . View Results It's unfortunate that the bikes weren't identified with the results so as to give some clarity to the classes as the " Old Iron " is the showcase of the event . Sorry for the curmudgeon sounding post , The reality being I was pissed off at myself for not having my sorry old ass out there with my trusty old Cub .
Thanks for the replies, Sounds like it was a good event. with a good turnout. I wish it was earlier in the weekend though. thanks, emti
Uh, no. Ever see Dennis Sweeten ride. Like the pre 65 then go ride the Scottish. Not even in the same decade. Pro rider vs ? VINTAGE OPEN rides the C line. NOVICE what a joke.!!
By the way what most of you consider vintage is somewhere between our b and c line. In our ITSA club. Granted you are talking about old vintage heavy weight iron. Dennis rode a BSA in the NATC clubman line last year at Kansas and smoked with a two point day, riding real sections.
While this is a bit of a bold statement , I've known Graham since the infancy of the Mid-O event . I considered him a friend and fellow competitor ( when I UstaKood ) A true enthusiast . If one would know the history of ITSA they would know that he was one of the founding fathers . Oh BTW , he's ridden the Scottish . Sadly , there very few examples of the old Iron at the event making me think about the extinction of them as their owners age and will the Bikes eventually disappear as the newer generation might not have the desire , $ , knowledge to maintain and present these bikes of old . Add to the fact that who needs an old bike when you can ride the event with your latest greatest Trials machine .
Well I did watch a video of him riding the arial well. But after watching Dennis do flick turns on a 500 BSA and actually ride large obstacles (I was there in Kansas). Not much comparison. Besides there are dozens of old riders in this country that are very, very good. Too bad they will never get together all at once.
Could not make it this year , but wanted to shout out to long time MOTA friend Sam Markley , who won the senior Iron Man . He rode his TY for 1st place in the Hare scrambles and placed 4th in the Trials Following his MX win on his Husky . Mota expert Jim Gawne took 2nd in the trial with some guys named Joshua and Karl for 1st and 3rd . 2019 AMA Off-Road Vintage Grand Champions named at 2019 Honda AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Avon Tyres
