Went on a day trip from Afton to Wyoming peak. Started up the trail from the Periodic Springs Campground. This is a hard enduro type trail over the mountains to the grays river road area where the Wy Peak trail stars up, and up. It is so hard and I had to find my way back via the next trail over the mountains to the south, corral lake saddle? something like that.
Wyoming Peak Trail is another story altogether. Very impressive trail design where they kept the average grade to probably 15% or less the whole way to the saddle below the peak. The impressive part is the terrain they built the trail through. It's a super steep side hill the whole way with only a couple well designed switchbacks. If you have the nerves to ride a foot wide trail on super steep side hills this is in medium difficult trail. The last few hundred feet from the saddle is nothing but rock and steepness. One could possibly make it up by using your best Graham Jarvis impersonation. I quit halfway so not to shred my tire and motor. The pictures are from the top of Wyoming Peak. I am shocked nobody's had a bonfire up there yet. I am on a mission to ride every legal single track trail in the Wyoming Range, there aren't many but so far they are all world class quality.

When I was in grade school in the mid 1950's there was a short rope tow ski area up Red Grade where I learned to ski...a little. Only enough hill for a few turns if I remember correctly, but it was fun! I wondered if the lake in your picture is Dome Reservoir. At that time we lived west of Sheridan near Beckton on Rapid Creek at the foot of the mountains. Beautiful area for sure.

It's nice up around Beckton, I usually make the loop from Sheridan out to Big Horn, up to Beckton and back to Sheridan after class on Saturday when I teach up there. I could definitely move up to the Sheridan area and have been considering it a lot lately.

I was on it last Tues. Had a great time up there. Stayed 2 nights at Arrowhead Lodge. New management since my last visit. Smoked wings with there in house BBQ sauce. Mmmmmmm. Rustic cabins for $50 (the bear wandering through camp convinced me to leave the tent on the bike) . Cant wait to get back out there.

We had lunch Friday at the Elk View Inn. Very tasty burgers and "fries". I haven't been to Arrowhead since they changed ownership, I'll check ti out sometime.

Did a quick little out and back this morning on some fairly rough two track- rough enough that it was a place I wouldn’t take my Tacoma before it was paid for, anyway (and I’m not particularly nice to trucks). The Strom continues to impress me more and more. I rode my old KLR on this route last year, the road was in much better shape, and I think it was a lot more work. Of course, the more I ride in the dirt, the more I want a trail bike. That’s a few years off, since I started grad school last week, so I’ve got plenty of time to figure out what I want. At first I was thinking a WRR or a KLX, but thinking a 690r might actually do what I want better. For now, I’m pretty psyched that the same bike that I did 2500 very comfortable (mostly) road miles in 6 states this month does as well as it does in the dirt, for dirt cheap.

Here are some of my day trips.

Sand Creek, fly fishing trip.

I love looking at these photos of my former home. Man, I really miss it sometimes... The humidity here has been in the excruciatingly high range for several months now and it is just plain uncomfortable to do anything physical outside ; the dew point yesterday morning at 10:00 AM was 72*F so my bike ride was an exercise in sweating gallons. I've lived in Virginia for 11 years now and am convinced I will NEVER acclimate to the humidity . Anyway, I particularly enjoyed this photo because I've been right there many times - what an AWESOME ride over empty high speed sweepers...



The weather was a little different last time I was there; the 9666 sign is just out of sight to the left side of the photo (and yeah, the date stamp is correct):

I remember riding around one fine spring afternoon north and east of the Sundance area, about half lost and not really caring, just enjoying the emptiness and I stumbled onto the nicest-looking section of creek (Sundance Creek? Redwater Creek? Can't recall...) like the one in the shot above. On a whim I stopped and cast a line in (I had a pack rod and a few flies with me of course) and two hours later finally had to quit because it was getting dark and I had a couple hundred miles to ride to get home. That was some of the best brookie fishing I'd ever done and to this day I have no idea where I was!

Can the old Tensleep Canyon road still be accessed? I attended high school in Kaycee in the late 1950's and we played basketball against Tensleep several times. Traveling up and down the old highway through Tensleep Canyon in the winter was a bit harrowing to say the least. Later on, hill climb competitions were held on the old canyon road after the new highway was completed on the north side of the canyon (don't know if these are still held or not). Thanks for the great pictures of the Big Horns & Powder River Pass. Good memories.

only took the one picture, but rode a nice loop around the smith’s fork to tri-basin divide, and back down the greys. Beautiful day in the mountains, road is very dusty since the grader has been out working on much of that 90ish miles. Got to keep The Wyoming thread on the front page through the fall!

Got a couple more rides in. Did a 15 hour ride. Vern and I got out of Gillette at 5am, both on GS’s north and over to Sheridan. The run over the northern Bighorns was 36 degrees up top then down threw Shell canyon to Cody. Then Cody up on Chef Joseph up and over Bearsthooth then down to Red Lodge for lunch (Red Lodge Pizza). After lunch right back up and over to Cody. From Cody south threw Meeteese south and took 431 over south of Warland. Up to Worland, east to Ten Sleep up the Canyon and over to Buffalo. Then I-90 back home to Gillette by 8pm. A first to do Bearstooth twice all in the same day from home. It was fun getting the new bike up on the edge a bit. The next day was able to take Judy my wife for a ride to the tower for lunch. I love this bike and Judy like it also. Win win for me.
