Right so I have some catching up to do, work's been insane but I've managed a day or two here & there for some Pennsyltuckey Noodlin'...

One thing I always liked was when me & my buddies would gang up on a Sunday and ride all day. That doesn't happen too often anymore for whatever reason, but we had a day with three of us a couple weeks back, and what a day it was.

We met for breakfast at the good old Baker's Diner in Dillsburg, then ran down to York Springs to one guy's barn to change the oil in my Commando... after that, we were ready to go... Wade had been on his 67 Triumph TT Special, but hadn't ridden his Gold Star in a while so out with the Goldie and away we went,

First order of business was to gas up, so down into York Springs proper where they were having a celebration, I think it was the Sesquicentennial, or 150 years? Anyway this tiny burg, normally pretty sleepy, was bustling, just crawling with folks meandering and gawking about... some cool cars n stuff to be seen tho, and everyone was having fun, the village & the celebrants had a nice vibe so it's all good...

We had a great ride, wound up down on PA route 324, rode down thru the Narrows and back again, stopping at Thirsty Farmer Berewery across from the old Round Barn down there, that place has beenn like a magnet to me this year!

Wade & I switched bikes at one point, him on my Commando and I got to ride the Goldie. Wow, what a ride, for an early 50s bike, the thing runs well and turns into the corners nicely! That big single certainly has its whole own personality, no wonder he loves it so much!

we made a big loop, just following our front wheels around. Heading back to Wade's, we went past the old dirt track at Latimore Valley Speedway and the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing.
    http://www.emmr.org
Now, the EMMR is pretty cool, if you're into car & bike stuff (who isn't, right?). Check em out, they have a long list of annual events and a sweet little museum, well worth the time to seek these guys out!

There was a massive dust cloud all across the road- they were having an Old Timey Roadster racing weekend! Well, we couldn't get off the bikes fast enough!

They were racing some bikes, too but it was mostly cars...

Well it was a total scream! we had fun looking around, talking to folks, taking photos, and watching some of the racing. It was late in the day tho, so we hopped on the bikes to head back to Wade's- only to find that he had picked up a roofing nail in his rear tire and had a flat!
Thankfully it wasn't too far away- just about 4 or 5 miles. Dave waited with the Goldie, and Wade rode Dave's pristine Daytona back to the house. I took off, and Wade took the truck to retrieve the bike. I had been wanting to get on the Daytona and asked Wade how it was to ride? He said, "It's as if you had a brand new bike and rode it right off the showroom floor" !!

Dave's bikes are all just pristine, and he's done every bit of work on them himself- a real tribute to his devotion to the bikes, his mechanical skill, and his attention to detail.

Here's another pic from Wade's barn- I was down there last week with my "new" film camera taking some photos and of course had my Olympus along, so took some shots with it as well while I was F-ing around...

The creeks and rivers have just been all up & down al summer with all the rain we've been having

Ha, well I forgot to include another ride I'd had back in August. I took the R100RS out and rode up to see the Graffiti Highway in Centralia PA. For those who don't know, Centralia was a mining town back in the day. The coal mine that runs beneath the whole town caught fire. They were unable to put the fire out, it burns to this day ( !!! ) and the Gubmint bought up all the houses, condemned the entire town, and shut it down. Part of this includes a short stretch or US Highway 61, that has gained some infamy because people have spray painted it nearly completely! Hence the name "Graffiti Highway". It has become something fo an "offbeat attraction", even getting mention in Trip Advisor!

There some Canadian guys who'd ride down from Toronto, were stying in some motel someplace and were doing their own Pennsyltuckey Noodlin". I got to talking with them and they said they often come down to ride our roads every summer! Nice guys, and I took their pix so they took mine:

This summer has sort of been all about old cars- we have locally, among other things, the Carlisle Car Shows, which are numerous thru the summer, AND the Hershey Antique Auto Shows. Both of these enjoy World Renown and hundreds of thousands of people come to them each. year from across the globe. Additionally, there are many local drag strips and dirt tracks, Pocono Speedway isn't too far off, nor is Watkins Glen. The Street Rod folks, the Good Guys I think they're called, have a massive annual meet down in York at the Fairgrounds, we have national hill climbs and lately, flat track racing! So it all adds up to one huge car/motorhead scene around here. :thumb

This day's ride was exceptional, in that I stopped to take pix of some stuff and ended up talking to a guy who invited me into his garage to see his collection of cool cars and stuff!

Out again back in late August on the R100RS. Wasn't sure where I was headed so just began by noodlin' around, wound up going past the old Dellville Bridge, my original favorite covered bridge that some asshole burned a few years back. Well someone has been working on it and it's coming along rather nicely!

They had sections of the burnt beams stacked and tagged... not sure why exactly? Evidence? Research? Anyone know why they'd do this? But you can see that the fire must have been caught before it did too much damage, at least to the beams we see here. I gotta tell you I am SO glad that there is money somewhere for this bridge to be restored! You may recall from last summer's Covered Bridge Tour that many of the local bridges up here in Perry County had been worked on, total rests or at least fixed up or maintained. Maybe its the local historical society but people care about the covered bridges!

    Meanwhile, back at the ranch.....
    elsewhere in Perry Co:

My rides this summer have sort of taken on a new element: pure randomness. I've ridden so many of these local roads, some just over & over again. I've begun just making random turns and letting my front wheel take me where it will. I live in the Great Cumberland Valley down by the State Capitol of Harrisburg. To our north & west, where much of the interesting riding is, lies what I call Pennsyltuckey's Ridge & Valley Region. take a peep at this image from the Pennsyltuckey Atlas & Gazetteer:

This picks up slightly west of us, but this clearly shows the area I'm talking about, all within easy day's riding. So in my random riding this summer, I can be pretty sure that sooner or later, I'm either going to come out on a major road- PA route 74, 850, 75, 35, or 522- or come out on a road that's going to lead me to one of these depending on which valley I'm in. Sometimes there's a small farm lane, or series of lanes, that follows along the base of the ridge, but not always. This means that while there is the occasional long road (aside from whatever state 2 lane highway running down the valley), most of the roads aren't very long. Now the other day tho, I made a right turn off of PA route 35 (west of the intersection with 333), followed that to its end, made left (away from home) and ended up on a long road. It was East & West Licking Creek Drive. It eventually turned to dirt, then eventually got back to a hard road, and brought me out on Germany Valley Road west of Lewistown. I made a left and followed that out to 522, made another left and came back on Blacklog Valley road, another long road that cuts back over the mountains and comes out on PA route 35 near where 850 Intesects! Now, looking at my Gazetteer, I see that if one rides down the length of the valley, almost any valley, it's possible to stay on one long road or a series of connecting roads that run the length of the valley- all the shorter roads are the ones that cross each valley.

Well live & learn, eh, kids? :lol3

So apologies here guys, my reporting on this is all mixed up. This is one of 3 or 4 days I had off work, a rare treat in summer. I rode every day or definitely 3 in a row- I did the Centralia ride, this one, and the Latimore EMMR dirt track ride in that series of rides, and I do believe I've managed to report it in exact backwards order! ha ha... that's what I get for not updating this RR often enough! My bad.

Meanwhile I did get out one evening last week on my Norton- I asked a buddy if he wanted to ride on Friday. He said "no but I'm going to a bike night in Mount Holly Springs tonight". I'll apologize again for not taking any pix of that, but I went out there and met up with a few long time friends I hadn't seen in like forever, and had a beer, then popped back by the good old Boiling Springs Tavern for a bite & a beer on the way home. Now this was with my buddy Dave (of the Pristine Bikes Collection). He rode his old (1968?) BMW R65 over to this bike night thing. He's a great guy but he's kind of straight. Well OK VERY straight. The folks I bumped into, very good friends I hadn't seen in a long time (like years) are more the 1% biker types, a lovely couple I've known for many many years. We were all like HEEEYYY! WHATS UPPPPP! and Dave was lookin at me and them like we all had three heads or aliens had just landed and were possibly violent and unfriendly. I said, come and meet my friends and he was like um yeah no, thanks. :lol3

He asked where I knew them from and I told him long drawn out story of how we met, and confessed something that he should have known about me by now- I have many many friends in South Central Pennsyltuckey- nearly all of whom fall into one Fringe Group or another: Bikers, Hippies, Food Service Workers, Entertainment Riggers, Stagehands, Guitar Players & Musicians , Artists, Freaks, Bartenders, Woodworkers, Mountain Dwellers, Gun Nuts, Conspiracy Theorists, Anarchists, Republicans & Socialists (LOL) etc etc etc. Name a fringe element and I'm there! I can pull this off because I KNOW in my heart that, when you strip way labels and other entrapments of society, even skin color- folks are just folks; we are all pretty much the same, worldwide.

So anyway, it was a fun evening, but sorry, no pix!

I did happen too get out on Friday tho- again on the RS...

Rode upriver, passing Norfolk Southern's Enola Railroad yard. LOTS of locomotives in the yard for whatever reason...

Was kinda hungry and ended up at the good ol Red Rabbit Drive In. I was told that this place made it into a show or book, Diners, Drive Ins & Dives? maybe? Can't say for sure BUT if you haven't had a BunnyBurger, you better get on up there to Clarks Ferry PDQ and hook yourself up.

I THINK I ended up with the BunnyBurger they used for the photo shoot? Whaddya'll think? :lol3

(pretty sure Bunny Burgers are not actually made of ground-up bunnies? But who knows for sure) ha ha ha

After lunch I rode up along the Juniata River on US 322, getting off not too far up thread to ride along the riverside on smaller roads, up to Newport. Continued upriver, crossing PA34 and got back on 322 to ride up to Thompsontown. Rode out to Where the mountain Road comes onto PA74 and turned south. Here's a few shots from along the way...

Did I mention the whole "car thing" going on around here?

This old bike frame was sitting on this porch... no idea what this is, anyone?

Riding south on 74, I decided I was pretty much going to head back to the house, my GF Miss C was
getting off kinda early so I thought it'd be nice if we both got home roughly the same time... But I rode past this Tractor Show and just had to stop! This was at Lupfer's Grove, a sweet little private park along 850 near Shermansdale.

Now living out here in the Wilds of Pennsyltuckey... well this is pure Farm Country. The folks out here love some tractors, and really, hey it's got a MOTOR! Of course fits right into our Motorhead Agenda, as does anything else with a motor.... bikes, cars, trucks, trains, helicopters
, and yep. Tractors. (and other farm equipment cuz hey who doesn't like em some diesel?) In truth I had zero idea this was even a thing, but I rode past, went down the road a ways, turned around and came back! Free entry and a load of fun.

What an awesome thing to happen upon. The very essence of the Pennsyltuckey Spirit right here. It really
doesn't get any more "down home" than this small, country event. I just love it!
This was mid day on Friday. I bet the people watching here on Saturday & Sunday would have been totally off the chart!

I'm probably in there too much; most of the staff know me by name. I usually meet friends there a couple times per week. If I sit at the bar, typically a Smithwick and Powers sidecar magically appear without ordering:)

I've been taking some time off lately, just kind of burnt out a wee bit on the constant grind of doing my job, I guess but in any case NOT working leads to more motorcycling!
One thing I'd had on my "list" for the year was the Jalopy Drags up at Beaver Springs Dragway near the center of the state. Hopped on the good ol R100RS, loaded with my cameras and tripod and took off....

It was fun with lots of cool cars to see and boy do those guys flog those old dragsters, turning 1/4 mile speeds of over 100 MPH

There were even some familiar vehicles on hand- these guys who were also at the Dirt Track racing weekend we'd accidentally sen a few weeks back!

only this time the'y brought along some vintage rails and stuff...

It was easy to walk around to see everything and there was a large turn-out of folks racing as well as a pretty darn large number of spectators with cool cars driven in for the weekend and day.

    more recently:

My buddy Dave & I were out the other day on our BritBikes, me on my Commando and he on his Triumph Daytona (which you've seen lot of this summer). Weren't exactly sure where to go but we ended up with a plan to eat lunch in Gettysburg, and followed our front wheels down there on a series of the smallest roads I could think of along the way. So we zig-zagged out into The Great Cumberland Valley, sooner or later riding roads with names like Rockledge Road, Enck's Mill Road, Celebration Hill, Mountainview Road, Sand Bank Road, & Bullfrog Road among others.

    The lake at Boiling Springs-
In spite of a passing shower nearby, it hadn't rained at all in this quaint little village!

Apple harvest season in Adams County, PA!

Well we got more or less "lost" and came out at the Gettysburg battlefield. When we saw Longstreet Toer, there was only one thinfg to do! Why? Because it was there!

The sun was shining, the breeze was blowing, the people were friendly, and the views were loverly. Of course there was a guy who had a motorcycle or 2 or 3 or.... so we had fun talking to hime for a few minutes...

    BUT THE VIEW...

looking back the way we'd come

This was on high ground anyway, and up on top of the tower you could see quite a ways in all directions! The south central Pennsyltuckey countryside is just wonderful.

Yeah that was fun and all, but we had missed our chance to be early to lunch and were now probably going to be late instead! [IMG]

Since the. "Gettysburg" Battlefield is amazingly *close* to Gettysburg, before long we were pulling into town and were parked up at the good ol Garryowen Pub...

We walked in, nodding to a guy at the bar who was obviously riding the one other bike also parked out front...

Ordered burgers & beers, sat there enjoying the moment and some conversation.

Now.... I saw the other motorcyclist get up and walk out. I'd been eyeballing his bike and thinking MAYBE he was a guy I'd spoken to here... dude had said he teaches in Gettysburg and "probably spends too much time at Garryowen Pub"...

Wel he left. And came RIGHT back in about a minute later, walked back to our table holding his helmet and said, "One of you guys Ricochetrider?" Or words to that effect...

SO he sat down and we got him a beer, and we hung out for a good while shooting the breeze and having a grand olde time of it. BUT eventually all good things must end, and we'd all finished our beers anyway. Bruce had to get back to teachin', so we walked out to the bikes at curbside...

and some dude pulls right in to the curb on his tricked out Triumph Scrambler, nose-to, hops off and starts talking to Dave about his Daytona!

SO there went another half hour or 20 minutes and boy what a good time it all was!

By now it was time to et a wiggle on, so we fired up the bikes (all four of us) and went our separate directions. Dave & I had lovely ride homewards, sticking to tiny lanes and damn near running out of gas- in our zeal and what with all the excitement n stuff we both forgot to GAS UP in GETTYSBURG!

BUT we made it all the way to York Springs (me on absolute fumes, I probably couldn't have made it another 1/2 mile) where we fueled up for the last leg up over Whisky Springs Road and back into Cumberland County. I rolled on when Dave turned up the mountain to go home, and rode downstream alongside the Yellow Breeches again... arriving home in daylight. But only just, as it's getting dark earlier and earlier these days.

All in all, it was a great day of riding and a great day of talking to folks and meeting people- Dave's new buddy sent him pix of a vintage "desert sled" Triumph he'd built himself! So we just may have someone else to ride with on occasion in the future! And we'll probably see Ben around here & there, too.

Thanks to Dave for accompanying me on this fine fine day! It really was awesome.

Now, this past weekend, I had a run of about 3 days off and had been wanting to get away a little- so I loaded up the Airhead with some camera gear and took off. I had this grand plan of staying out for a few days but in the end decided to come home on day 2. Still, I had a great ride of about 540 miles, covered some awesome roads, got lost along the way, having fun talking to folks along the way and just dong that which I like to do: ride, ride, ride.

Didn't stop to take a huge number photos, tho I did finish one roll of film and start another. Snagged a few digital images along the way, of course so here they are. My outbound route was kinda straight north and little bit east-
Up US 322 to PA 147 & 225. Rode 225 up to Hiway 61, to PA 42 into Bloomsburg PA.

Some time ago, the BmW folks had a big national rally here. During that weekend, someone had gotten permission to take over the square of Bloomsburg (which is actually ROUND... go figure!) and there was a "gathering" of R100RS motorcycles.
They dubbed this gathering RS Squared, and a handful of bikes showed up...

I thought it'd be fun to revisit the spot and get a pic of my current RS at the Square Of Bloomsburg:

    OK so I'm easily entertained.

Moving on, the riding got better as I was entering that middle region of Pennsylvania known as The Endless Mountains. Hardly a straight stretch of road to be found, up and down and all-around. With very little traffic...

PA routes 42 to 154, terminating at Troy PA, takes you right thru the World's End State Park and routes you along the Loyalsock Creek
    WIKI LINK WORLDS END

and is a truly lovely part of the World.

I also got a shot of this covered bridge, another prime example of Pennsyltuckey Craftsmanship in Olde World Style, a fairly typical Burr Arch Bridge:

and finally this day, I passed this curious little restaurant- although I did not stop to eat here...
The place, as you'll see, sparked some level of interest, considering my job in the Entertainment Industry:

This was just outside Mansfield PA (Troy > Mansfield on US Hiway 6 a distance of roughly 20 miles) where I stopped for the night. I hadn't gotten on the road until roughly 1:30 PM (1330) so had a good, swift ride of over 300 kilometers this day.

Next day I was up with the .... well I got up about 8 nd hit the road around 9 ish.

I backtracked only slightly and went north into the open country, riding thru PA's Northern Tier towards the New York State Line. Destination, Watkins Glen at the bottom of Lake Seneca, one of the Finger Lakes in NY state.

Had a nice lunch at a small & local coffee shop/bakery, sat in the sun for a while talking to folks, eating, and planning my ride back south.

Here's a shot of nearby Montour Falls.

Watkins Glen is also known for its state park with waterfalls- but I wasn't about to grapple with the hordes of tourists piling out of their busses in order to hike an unknown distance to see them.

Instead, here's a shot of Lake Seneca:

Lake Seneca is the largest of the so-called Finger Lakes in NY state. A glacier-lake, it's about 40 miles long and not super wide, but it IS quite deep with na average depth over 300 feet and max depth of around 600 some-odd feet!

Watkins Glen is also known for its racetrack and vintage auto racing.
They have a long history of racing and also perhaps less celebrated but more infamous; Watkins Glen hosted a single, massive concert with the Allman Brothers & Grateful Dead back in 1973. The Band also did a 2 hour performance, and all 3 bands "performed" for early arrivals during their epic sound checks the day prior to the actual concert...

Here's a pic of a mural on the side of the bakery where I had lunch, commemorating Watkins Glen racing history.

By the time I finished lunch it was after 1300, around 1330 in fact. (1;30 PM) so it was time to get a wiggle on. With only a rough plan I headed out of town in a direction of south & west. Whatever "plan" I did have quickly unraveled, and I ended up on a not very interesting state road, finally ending just outside Corning NY. I picked a small town just across the NY/PA syne line, entered that into my phone and took off. Well that led to a detour which led to smaller and smaller county roads which turned into dirt roads which eventually led me around the detour and back down into PA.

At this point, I was pretty much pointed towards the house, so while stopped for gas in Galeton, I texted a good friend along the basic path homewards to see I f could come visit for the evening and spend the night? Alas, she wasn't feeling well but by the time I got that text I was down in her neighborhood- Penn's Valley in Central PA, west of State College...

BUT I had fun riding along Hiway 6, down into Renovo along PA 144 and then down along the West Brach of the Mighty Susquehanna River to Lock Haven.

I then picked up 220 south, riding out into the eastern end of PA's Ridge-&-Valley Region onto PA 64 > 445 to Millhiem, where, after hopping a couple rides, riding thru a couple valleys, & dodging many Amish buggies (Sunday is Amish Outing Day), I was surprised to find the good old Elk Creek Cafe open and bustling!
I quickly parked up and dismounted, my mouth watering at the very thought of a nice ale.

Turns out, however, that this was a tickets-only music-night thing. I didn't have a ticket, so I couldn't even sit at the bar and have a beer.... BUT they were kind enough to let me use their toilet and buy a "crowler" to go. For those who may not know- a crowler is a 32 ounce can of beer they fill and seal on the spot, for you to take away ales from the brewery in. Some genius dreamed this up- it replaces the need for buying a re-usable glass container- commonly known as a "Growler". Folks who live near and frequent breweries often might buy a Growler and return time & again to refill it... but a CROWLER is a once-&-done affair. Perfect in my case AND the nice bartender gave me a sample of ale so I got a teensy bit in me!

By now there was only a wee bit of daylight remaining. Temps were dropping too so I suited up, adding a light balaclava and glove liners to the blend of riding gear. My friend was out, not feeling well- so by now I had resolved to just hit the road and hot-foot it home, taking the fast way: PA 45 > 144 > US 322.
I arrived in good stead long after dark, with 868 some-odd kilometers showing on my bike's trip-o-meter.

Here's the basic route- going clockwise. This also shows some prior route but this go-round I began on 322 and ended on 322 as well.

Cheers guys, looks like there is still many days of riding possible before it gets too cold to do anything. SO stay "tuned" and look for more Pennsyltuckey Noodlin.

    Ciao 4 now.
    Thanks fer lookin.

    Shooting film??

I picked up a 4 pak of Fuji Film this past summer at Wal Mart. The check-out gal said - "I didn't think we still carried film". I have an old FM2 that I like to drag out now and then. Rumor has it that the photo hipsters are shooting film these days. Great trip report and pics!

I actually have a local camera shop. He sends the film out to I believe Kansas for processing/development. I've used him a lot for this but these last 2 rolls I sent to Richards Photo Lab in Los Angeles.

Richards provides negatives and image scans, for a couple bucks more they send proof prints as well. They do a bit of a nicer job on the proof prints, better than the lab in Kansas. Search film development and see who's near you or whatever, there are a fair number of options and no doubt some are better than others. I like Richards well enough, and I got a contact for another guy off a Facebook photography page- prolly throw him some business as well at some point.

A friend of mine is a well known local
Photographer who knows everyone who's anyone in our area. He's gotten permission to use the photo lab at the local
Community college any time we want to get in there! So at some point I'll learn how to develop my own film!

    Cheers guys, ttyl

From another PA rider here, (Cambria County) enjoyed your pictures. Better late than never. I didn't know that Perry County was that rural. Gotta get up there. Thanks for taking the time to post.

I absolutely loved this thread. Thank you for sharing! I'm way up here in Tioga County, I travel a bit to an office in New Holland, and you've given me some new places to go check out and some I've passed in my travels that I already should have. If you get up this way over summer feel free to give me a shout.

Howdy everybody. Happy fucking 2020 (yeah right). Pullin this thread out of the dust bin to share a ride I took back in October. Had a so-so summer with s one motorcycling but my Big Rig K1200 was in the shop for months. After all was aid & done it was worth it, and I was so cranked to have the bike back that I took it for a little loop around PA> MD> WV> VA> WV> OH> & back into PA.

I originally wanted to just stay in Pennnsyltuckey, and zig zag all over the state, exploring roads I know and noodles my way all over, finding roads I never knew too... BUT there was a rain system hanging a bout the whole state all week, so I went sought instead. For a long time I've been wanting to go ride along the Ohio River, something about the romance of a working water way, old-time Americana stuff, or whatever but it's been in my head for quite a while so after deciding to ride anywhere but PA, I knew I'd end up over there. When I left the. house I had no real plan, and I ended up riding west from Harrisburg, picking up US route 30 at Fort Loudon

and going west to US 522 which took me thru MD & WV for minute, riding down to Front Royal, VA. At that point, I jumped onto the lovely Skyline Drive and ride south a ways.

For a Tuesday it was pretty crowded, I guess between the proximity to DC and the sweet fall weather, seemed like everyone who. had a car was up there!
I eventually got off at like US 33 and rode west towards Elkis an Franklin WV, stopping for the night in a funky old motel not far from Seneca Rocks.

Next day I zig-zagged all over the state, stopping at one point in Buckhannon for coffee and lunch

I knew I wanted to end up down in Huntington, in order to ride Ohio on Day 3.
