Took my 1250 in for its first service, a little late at 950miles due to the dealer been booked up for servicing. I mentioned that i had a ticking noise and wanted it checking out. The ticking increases with the revs in typical valve train fashion.

With that said, the technicians confirmed the noise isn't normal and needs looking into.
They have checked valve clearance, All OK.

Next steps is to look a little higher up as it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine.
My guess is it could be an injector.

Anyone else had any issues on the 1250's?

The dealer has been fantastic thus far and provided me with a courtesy bike.

My 1250GS seems to make more noise at idle than my 17.5 GS did. I assume it's normal. I don't think it increases with revs but I'll fire it up tomorrow and pay close attention.

I'm taking delivery of a 1250 GSA in the next few days and will see if it sounds the same.

    I'll report back.

Mine seems worse when maintaining a low speed, in a higher gear... Basically when the exhaust note is quieter.
i'm pretty sure it disappears from 5k onwards

This is what will keep me from upgrading to a 1250. I hate the noise my 2015 makes and have to wear ear plugs if only to cut out the rattling. Surely they can build a modern watercooled engine that is quiet. You wouldn’t buy a car that sounded like that

Mine has this as well. Low speed, under load is especially bad. Going uphill for example. I plan to take it in this week to hear about how this is normal.

Yes I'm lucky enough to have a place in Montana and the GSA will spend the summer there and take me to the D2D non-rally and other places.

Latest is, the initial report has been sent to BMW for advised next steps.
They are suspecting potentially valves and or cam shaft needs replacing.

my bike arrived at the dealership beginning of April so i would say build time was approx beginning of feb.

My 2013 1200 GSW LC always had the same noise from the right head cylinder (nothing on left).
Max BMW in NH always maintained the bike and says nothing wrong with the engine.
Just completed the 36K service/check, no issues.
Noise is still there, a little disconcerting I know...but the bikes runs great.
Curious to know what your guys will tell you...
In the meantime enjoy the ride (and do not get too paranoid about this...like I did in the past)

The ShiftHead is quieter than the Wethead. You should always wear hearing protection. Then again, don't, and instead of the motor noise, you will have a constant ringing in your ears.

My 2014 GSA was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from day one. It's part of the charm. It's unfortunate to hear the 1250 is suffering the same issues. They keep supplying less than optimal engines and we keep buying. They should rename the brand " they all do that" . How many times have I heard that ! I don't mind the noise though. What I do mind is the weird vibration/fuelling issue from 2700 to 3000 rpm especially at lower gears. And the snatchy throttle at low speeds. I'd like to try a 1250 to see if that has changed. It's sort of living with the devil you know rather than the one you don't know. LOL

No vibration, fueling issues or snatchy throttle so an improvement there for sure. Its actually one of the smoothest modern bikes i have rode for a while.

i was actually going to embrace the tapping is normal and part of the charm thing, but if the guys who work on and tear these engines apart daily say its not normal then you have to go with there advice.
