Bought a 2013 R1200GS a couple weeks ago. Guy was leaving town for a new job and needed to sell fast so got a good deal but don't have contact info for him. I have two mysteries I need to solve: There is a mount on the tank for a bag but I can't tell what brand. Doesn't look like a Givi mount to me. No writing/identification anywhere on it. Any guesses? Also he had a license plate storage box installed (messily). I have the key and it fits/turns but it doesn't open up, so I'm wondering if I'm missing a catch or release somewhere to allow it to open. Don't want to force it open since it would be nice to have for registration/insurance if I can figure out how to open it with the key. I'm a little worried about what might be in there (that's not mine officer, I swear!), so if I can't get it open soon I'll just remove it from the bike and bust it open. Pics below of the tank mount and the storage box, thanks for any ideas.....
My guess is that the little locking tab screw (on the end of the cylinder) has come loose. I see a drill and a probe of some sort in your future. Chin scratching time - where to drill.....? Good luck.
I've always wondered about those license plate storage boxes. Are they waterproof? REALLY waterproof? It'd be ... ungood ... if it turns out that the registration got wet last spring and is now an unreadable, disgusting, soggy, moldy, piece of paper.
There are arrows on both sides of the cylinder and what appears to be room for the cylinder to slide up and down. I would try sliding the cylinder up and see if it releases.
There also appear to be images of a closed padlock at the top and an unlocked padlock at the bottom. Slide it down once key is turned. That duct tape is a forboding sign though....
The arrows indicate that the lock mechanism needs to slide up when unlocked to swing it open. Get it open, remove it and toss it in the trash. Seems like a useless farkle.
