Alternative to morning coffee? EDIT: Water. It will be plain water.

All seem to have caffeine. I am learning about a lot of things we don't get in the backwaters of Maine.

That looks like a great way to make a shot. I had an Aeropress when I was drinking coffee, but it was a bit more than I wanted to take camping. Now that I'm off caffeine, I'm certainly going to keep the equipment simple.

That would loosen me up, I suppose, for when I tumble of the side of the trail.

Just thinking out loud because the hot water with lemon got me thinking...

My wife often likes hot water with lemon, a little honey and whatever bitters strikes her fancy. It all adds a bit more flavor and teeters on herbal tea without being the typical fruity or "tastes like dirt" herbal teas you usually see. It's a little more to carry, but honey and bitters are both shelf stable (honey can even be had in single serve packets). Lemon juice will need to be kept cold, however. Lemons themselves may be a better bet for staying fresh.

When in camp, orange juice gets me awake better than anything else. YMMV of course. Hot chocolate is a good warm alternative to coffee.

I used some instant coffee years ago, it came in tea bags, drop in hot water, one of the big names in coffee made it. It was OK according to people that actually liked coffee. I can only stand to drink coffee with lots of sugar and creamer, otherwise it tastes about like used motor oil to me black.

If theres someone at home, or someone you can communicate with, you can make up small parcels to mail to you on the road if you know where youll be. You can have mail sent General Delivery to any post office, they will hold it two weeks generally before sending it back. Just go to the window and ask for your general delivery mail and show ID. It works also for people travelling to Ca and cant take their regular capacity pistol magazines, just mail to yourself at a town you know youll be within the next two weeks outside of CA.

There is no substitute for coffee, duh!

Don't know if they still make the stuff. Back in the 70's my ex got on an anti-coffee kick with a grain drink coffee substitute called Postum. I never liked it and stayed with coffee. Seems a lot of folks did like it though. Also chicory sucks. It's some trash weed(cheap) that got popular during the depression as a filler to make reg coffee go farther. It did not improve the taste.

And also served in our nation's prisons.

Suppose your riding partner values his morning decaf and will be travelling with collapsible GSI coffee maker? I bet he doesn’t mind sharing.

I’ve also tried Caffix and other beet-based(?) substitutes. Not worth it.

Celestial Seasonings Roastaroma is also pretty good. Not easy to find or resupply but delicious IMO.

I also really like mint tea anytime of day, hot or iced.

Watch out. I'll be in camp drinking all your decaf while you're out getting exercise before a day of dirt riding.

For a few years I had mint tea every evening. Might work although I don't see the supply is any more widespread than Roastaroma.

Went shopping this morning and there was no Roastaroma. The whole lineup from Celestial Seasonings has changed. No Red Zinger either although I'm not looking for something bright like that.

And there were plenty of mints. My previous trouble finding mint was because I use loose tea and indeed there were no loose mints.

The last time I bought Roastaroma, it had to be bought online and in large quantity. In fact I still have some. I'll give some to you next time I see you so you can see if it's worth digging for or not.

This is timely. I'm in the middle of my Fall Great Northeast Tour...parked in the Central Adirondacks as I type. Morning coffee is always a struggle on the road.

The Kurig machines are becoming commonplace in-room equipment in middle-priced motels, now...and that's a good thing. The coffee they make is mediocre but uniform. But the old hotel coffee-makers...too many people would pour cold coffee in the water reservoir, complete with cream and sugar, and reheat it that way. The dairy and sugar would coat the innards...impossible to clean; and would contaminate coffee brewed in it.

And of course, some low-priced motels...as with room phones, in-room coffee is just going away.

Now I'm assuming you just want to dispense with the TIME lingering over the morning joe. In which case I'd suggest, just packing No-DoZ or similar caffeine tablets. Two of them give you the same lift your morning grind would - and you can have a bottle of OJ or Monster or just water, with your energy bar or Muscle-Milk road breakfast.

I've gotta disagree with some of this. Kurig (and similar) create way too much trash per cup. I can't bring myself to use them unless I'm really desperate.

I suppose it's just a numbers game and someone somewhere would have poured coffee into the reservoir of an in room machine, but I've not experienced it. Now I'll be paranoid every time I use one!

Also, the OP is looking to enjoy a hot beverage sans caffeine - No Doz tablets are literally the exact opposite of that :)

Okay. The only trash the Kurig creates that just making-coffee does not, is the little plastic cups. Now, you do know what happens to those plastic drinking cups, and those styrofoam coffee cups, you find in hotel rooms or campground lobbies, do you not?

We all gotta live by our own principles; but the emoting eco-warriors have got us feeling guilty for every breath we take. I'm not buying it - the little plastic cups are just a smidgeon of the waste that we generate every day. And it isn't destroying the climate.

As to the other...if he's taking time to ENJOY a hot cup, why not coffee? I thought the purpose was to expedite things. If you have the time, have the joe. If not, find another way to jolt yourself awake.

I have a strainer mug I use or will fill empty tea bags. At home I have a couple of of French presses, 1 for coffee, one for tea. As for non-caffinated suggestions, there's a bunch of delicious teas found in the link.

Lingering over a hot beverage is exactly what I want to do. It just has to be a morning beverage with no caffeine or perhaps a tiny amount of caffeine.

It's like you missed the first post entirely.

Can you quantify a tiny amount of caffeine? It would help dial in what you're looking for. .5mg, 5mg, 20mg, 35mg per cup or no mg per cup?
