I told a friend, when Ford first came out with that pop out ladder for the tailgate, that I liked the functionality of it and thought it was wonderful. He replied, "but they have to make the tailgate hollow to hold it. You shift a pallet of bricks in the back of the truck and your tailgate is toast." I just stared at him until he said, "Oh, yeah. For you it'd probably be fine. You don't carry anything heavier than a lawnmower."

The tailgate on my 19 f350 is not hollow.

For those of you thinking that the ladder steps on the new trucks will help, they do but the truck is so tall that even at 6' it still isn't easy unless on flat ground, but preferably with back tires in a ditch. Damn things are seriously tall!

My dads a commercial fisherman that uses his F250 like a truck, we installed his fall tailgate which is a old smashed one with diamond plate on the inside aka heavy as hell. That new gm tailgate wouldnt last a week and just a rich man bragging gimmick IMO.

Heard this is going to be a option on the next gen superduty to make it easier getting into the bed.

Full disclosure? I want to be one of them.

So do I thou I hate the new GM styling but I'd have a new loaded out F450 to pull my toys.

My comment was more towards what's the longevity of these tailgates when trucks are actually hauling heavy stuff that's being slid across the tailgate. Like @SnowMule I mostly haul my sled in the bed or my bike is sitting on the middle of the tailgate so will I end up damaging them?

Things have changed alot in the truck world, in the 90s everyone i knew with a truck used it for work, now most are barely used for more than grocery getting and cost what some houses cost.

The 1/2-tons for sure.
3/4- and 1-tons still have some "workhorse" to them.
Medium duty.... most don't even come with beds.

I cant remember the last time I saw one of the new 3/4 tons actually hauling stuff but that's the owners choice.

We are getting rid of some trees soon and was explaining to my wife how I'd like my next truck to be a 3/4 ton so I'd have the bigger truck for projects like this.....wives dont understand man logic.

Speaking of crappy tailgates, 2012-2018 Rams have a recall on them for faulty latches that allow the gate to randomly pop open. We have a 2011. Our truck was pretty immaculate for a used truck. My wife hooked up her horse trailer, tossed the wheel chocks in the bed and closed the gate. Hopped in the truck, shut the door and heard a bang. Got out to look things over and the gate came open, smacking the top of the jack. She's freaking out because she can't believe she didn't latch it right and now it has a nice round gash in the paint along with a dent.

Now, she slams the thing shut and proceeds to yank on it, wiggle it, trying to get it open and it doesn't. Gets in the truck and heads down the road like 5 miles. Gets to the farm, swings around and goes to back in and she hears a weird noise so she stops and goes to have a look.

You need a bigger truck, yes you do !

That really sucks, I've never been that impressed with their tailgates thou never heard of any popping open. So is there a update or you stick dealing with it?

I know I'd be losing fuel mileage thou a 06 with 94k on it gas mileage isnt to big a deal, just would like knowing it can handle whatever if needed. That load will bring my truck to its knees.

My wife's 14 has came open a few times, luckily not when towing....

Hopefully the recall fixes it, mine had the recall done before I took delivery.

Stuck with it on my dime. The recall if for '12+ and they have not released one for prior years, which they need to !

Ram definitely had a recall on this. They wouldn't stop harassing me about mine. The dealership called and emailed weekly. Ram mailed me a bunch of notices. I don't personally know anyone affected by it. I had two in the generation that were recalled and never had an issue with it. However, it only takes one for people to get concerned...and rightfully so. Here is the lowdown on what happened.

I doubt the fancy tailgates are being purchased by people who use their trucks hard. But for people like me, who use a 1/2T as a daily driver simply because I find it to be about the most comfortable vehicle out there and has just enough oomph to tow a travel trailer if I can ever afford one, they'd be great. The only things I "haul" for work are me, a brief case and, during hail season, a collapsible ladder - I could do it all in a Prius. But I love my truck.

Honestly, I tend to haul lighter stuff in my truck bed. If its heavy, I'm typically using one of the trailers. I have the truck to tow the trailers, not for the bed. To me, the bed is just an added bonus.

Funny. I love the new GM styling (mine's a '17), and you like the Fords. About thirty five years ago I met an old farmer in Texas. We were discussing a difference of opinions and he said "Well, son, that's why they make Fords and Chevys." I don't remember him, the claim or the full conversation - but that part I remember 100%.
